In the interest of starting a meaningful topic that DOESN'T involve body parts I thought I'd start this one. I don't travel much. I'm home, here in the USA, living in south Texas. I live blocks from shore with my guy and pets. Its a fishing town primarily but we also cater to tourists. But I love to hear about far off places I never get to see. Discovery channel is great, but "hearing" it from a local is better. So....
Now, tell us more about where you are from... what country? What is the climate like? What is housing like? What are your favorite dishes that are prepared in your country? What is your biggest holiday and what does it represent?

I live way off in another land far different than Texas. It is underpopulated, rural, largely unexplored, and inhabited by strange people with strange ways. We call ourselves 'Razorbacks' and we live in deepest darkest Arkansas!
We have all kinds of climate with even some snow in the northern parts, but no wheres near as much snow and ice as those yankees.
Homes are plentiful and cheap and everyone who can acquire (one way or the other) 2 X 4's and tar paper has one.
Our favorite dishes day to day vary from venison, rabbit, possum, and even sometime armadillo. It mostly depends a lot on what was slow getting out of the way on the highway last night. Just eat around the tire tracks.
It has been fun chatting with you alls but I has to go out and find us something to eat now. Bye.

My my aren't you funny today.
I've been in your beautiful state. And while some people do indeed live just how you described it I know its not that way for everyone. The countryside there is gorgeous too. I was born in Kansas, grew up in Missouri, and lived most of my adult life in Iowa until moving here to Texas three years ago. I know parts of southern MO are just like you described also. LOL I can almost hear the banjos as I type this.1 person likes this

well like the post above i am in arkansas but i hve lived in many states. arkansas is one of my favorites. i am right on the texas arkansas border in ogden. about 10 miles from texarkana. it is so pretty here and peaceful. big trees every where. fishing, hunting, lakes, rivers, parks, animals, flowers, etc. one thing i love about here is that the peole in the jails have to clean up the roads and stuch so we dont have trash everywhere it is nice. when we drive down stateline you can really tell the difference. arkansas is nice no trash and then on the other side of the street is texas and smoke butts, cans, paper, etc all over the place. not to mention we have trees on our side of the road to where texas side doesnt lol.
food hmmm good old mash potatoes, gravy, chicken fried steak, fried catfish, pinto beans, cornbread. dont forget the homemade ice cream.
right now we are hot, rainy, with light breeze. but usally we are the same of course.
you can get a 3 bedroom house here for like 350.00 a month. in fact i have rental property here and they are 2-3 bedrooms for 275 a month. rent is alot cheaper and there are jobs here too.
now i do like hunting season but here it is fishing seaon for us that is the big holiday. when you see all teh boats, rvs, and loaded up trucks headed to the rivers and lakes.

Thanks for sharing. :) I know what you mean about Texas and litter. I've been here three years and I still can't believe the way some people live. I live in a mobile home park for adults 55 or older. It is kept very clean but other parts of town aren't. I asked the manager of the park if we could please recycle. She looked at me like I was nuts. Apparently its not a thing down here. So all of the trash goes to the dumpster. Its sad. I'm very surprised by the rent amount there. Here I own my mobile home but pay lot rent. My bill each month includes basic cable and water. But my rent alone is $315.00 just for the lot! I would love to be able to rent a house for the amount you have up there. But alas, here I am.

Hi my friend
I live in central Illinois in the US. We live about 3 hours south of Chicago and 2 hours from St. Louis, MO. I live in a one story house in relatively quiet and nice neighborhood with my hubby and all my great pets.
I typically spend my time in one room of the house, my office, unless I have to go to the bathroom that is. lol We have the regular four seasons here and right now it is the middle of summer and hotter than all get out.. In the 90's and that's too hot for me. lol
Oh and by the way, I have two arms and two legs. Sorry, had to bring in the body parts. hehehe
Have a great evening,
Char

Hello Tess! How lovely for you, to live in a fishing village! I'm in Australia, about 20km from the ocean - but we do go to the beach for fish'n'chip lunches in the spring and summer. The climate where I live varies - cold in winter, hot in summer - but in the tropics of Australia it's hot all the time with a 'wet' or 'dry' season. One of our main 'delicacies' is a black spread called Vegemite, made of yeast. People eat it on bread or toast (yuck). It's similar to Marmite, which is British, but I don't think you have an equivalent in USA. (From what I've heard, when Americans taste Vegemite they hate it!) We have a holiday for ANZAC Day which is pretty important - it's a remembrance of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli, and we have marches all over the country where veterans and families remember. We also have Australia Day. Australians love a public holiday!

Ye, we do have snow - there are snowfields in Victoria and also in the Snowy Mountains (original name!) in New South Wales. We have a small state called Tasmania which isn't attached to the mainland but floats around off the bottom of the continent ... they have snow, too!

Cool, someone from Australia. I've always been fascinated by it. About all I ever saw of it or learned about it was watching Steve and Terri Irwin. I have heard of vegemite - remember that old song about 20 years ago about a vegemite sandwhich? Man I can't think of the name of that group.. hmmm LOL I've also heard it tastes nasty. I know you guys have winter down there, but do you get snow too? When I lived in the midwest we had actual blizzards. Total white outs with the interstates and roads closed. We always stocked up and hoped the power didn't go out for heat. Believe it or not I sometimes miss snow. Don't see that here in south Texas. Thanks for sharing with us. :)

I'm from indonesia. The climate is just like any other country in southeast, those two season stuff = rainy or dry (Kinda envy you guys in the four season country ;) )
Though it also depends on which city you live in. My hometown, bogor, known as a rain-city as it rains almost every day. And when it's beyond 6 in the afternoon, fog starts to come and it's gonna be really cold. Maybe because it's situated in between three mountains. But that was a thing of the past. Nowadays, it's not cold anymore, the fog will be from the cars and other mass transportation, though it still rain often.
Bogor located in west side of java island. The traditional people who live there came from the race of Sunda (the javanese that most foreign people know located in the middle and the east side of the island) Sundanese meal is usually kind of salty and like any other island-kind type of food, use excessive spices ;)
And being born and grow up in bogor, i happen to love sundanese food :)
As the dutch once ruled indonesia, some of the old houses in bogor got dutch influence. But the ones built after the dutch colonial era looks like your everyday average joe. Uhm.. i mean, house :)
Small, one story house. Big, one story house. Big, two story house. We got it all :)
The city where i live now, Jakarta, the capitol city, is more of a mixture. Especially since this is where people from all across the country wants to live and people from the rest of the world seems to visit (aside from bali)
There's no distinctive style of housing (though we can still found some of old colonial dutch building. Some has been modified to serve as museums).
The traditional people who occupy jakarta called Betawi people.
The climate in jakarta is either 'hot' or 'extremely hot'. Just kidding :)
Jakarta also have rain season in which, if the rains is very, very heavy, it can cause flood all over jakarta. It's kinda embarrassing to see the capitol city of your country is the news in cnn because of the flood lol.
I think the biggest holiday in indonesia will be the independence day. Because there will be some sort of fair and games and etc. And it's big because the whole country's celebrating it.
And dont forget Ie Dul Fitri ! Being the biggest populated muslim country, it is a special day too! The people who celebrates it will be sending 'ketupat' (rice grain puts inside a some sort of boxlike made from coconut leaves and then steamed) and its condiment away to their neighbours. No matter the neighbors celebrates it or not.
Overall, with its ups and downs and developing-country nature, life in indonesia is not really all that bad. Especially when you know that stupid people, silly drivers, dim&dirty bureaucrats is a nature of people thus, it's everywhere.
And this probably the longest post i've ever made in mylot! Sorry for tiring your eyes, but you have one good topic here, tess! :thumbs up: Too good perhaps, that i just babble nonstop, sorry for that!

Oh, my, tess!!!
thank you for choosing my post as the best response!
I'm thrilled!
my 30th post is a 'best response' post *grinning from ear to ear*
And also relieved to know that you didnt find my post too long. Also apologize for the grammatical error i made that i spot now when i re-read it but not yesterday when i post it lol.
Yes, other countries and cultures, given from the perspective of a local people who live there are fascinating. That way, we can understand the countries and cultures better. And when we visit there someday, we wont be in culture-shock that much ;)
I hope my post can make you want to visit indonesia someday ;)

I guess you already heard from someone about my country, the Philippines! It's tropical here. We only got two seasons, dry season and wet season. Somehow, global warming has changed our weathers oddly... one minute we get super hot ray of the sun, the next minute it's pouring down cats and dogs, sometimes causing floods... then it is very hot again.
In the outskirts, houses are generally made of woods and nipa.. it's a material that allows air to go in and out the house. So it's cool in the morning, warm at night.
the city house are just like any other houses i guess. made of bricks and concrete.
I love the fish dishes. Especially bangus (milk fish) the country's national fish. it's really yummy, but just be careful with the many tiny and slender bones.
Holidays? Generally, it's related to religion (christianity) because Spaniards have abused us, Filipinos, for many centuries. I hate them spaniards.
Anyways, if you can think of a country conquered by Spaniards before and are now rich, tell me.

I've made a friend online from the Philippines. She often tells me about your country. I haven't heard of that kind of fish... but then I'm not a big fish eater. I know, odd since I live in a fishing villiage. LOL Thanks for sharing.

I live here in NY on the Hudson River, it is hot and humid in the summer and cold with some snow in the winter. I am about 3 miles from the river. Housing is expensive here, but cheaper then in NYC. I consider this to be rural, but my husband says NO. Food here is really pretty ordinary with no specialties in spite of the fact that the Culinary Institute of America is right now the road.
Like you, I would guess our biggest Holiday is Christmas.

I've always lived in the US. I started out in Pittsburgh, PA, lived in Michigan, Florida and Texas, and now in Cincinnati, Ohio. Of all the places I've lived, I loved living in FL and TX the best, because I was near the beach. I love watching the sun come up at the beach.
Of all the places I've visitd, North Carolina is my absolute favorite. Well, that and Hawaii, but I doubt I'll ever make it back there. I'd love to retire to North Carolina someday. It has mountains and beaches, and my hubby (who has never lived anywhere besides this particular community in Cincinnati) would like it because it still has all four seasons.
