I have heard alot of talk lately about children and nits - that is the dreaded head lice. It has been about three years since my school child bought a head of nits home to share with his siblings and his parents - how sharing and caring of him! It was hellish because I was pregnant at the time so could not use any chemicals on my scalp - so all of the shop products were out that contained anything harsh! I used all of the natural products under the sun and then I used to 'fry' them with the hairdryer too. I must say that I didn't seem to get rid of them all together and I kept reinfesting my family who then gave them back to me - it was discusting and I don't wish headlice on any pregnant women out there! *scratches head* I am making up a preventative spray for my childs hair before the school term starts - for sure! So how about you - tell me of your horror tales of headlice and how you get rid of them. How often is there an outbreak at your childs school?

i know what you mean. when we lived in lake dallas texas it was horriable. all summer my kids were free of it then school would start and it was a battle all year. when we moved to arkansas no more problems with it. we home school now so i dont worry about it near as much and we dont seem to have a problem with it in this town either. it is dangerous though to use those products alot as well. not to mention the price. we got to the point that every time the kids got it we would put mayo in there hair get a plastic shower cap fit it snug around there hair and leave them like that for 24 hours it killed them and then we would have to pick out the eggs. dont forget to clean everything too omg that was horriable all teh stuffed animals the couch the carpets it was a nightmare. i threatened to shave our kids heads and we have girls. the school they went to had carpet which made it worse i think. youhave parents that wont take the time or do it right. you have schools that dont clean it good enough to keep it from spreading. there are so many issues that make it worse to deal with. mayo is the best thing i found cheap. easy, works, no hard chemicals, just greasy hair for a few days afterwards. lol. good luck and do like i did go to the school and throw a fit with other parents get teh school to clean better. like i said summer no issues. moved no issues. school time there issues bad.

Mayo!- well there's one I hadn't heard before - I know I have used conditioner to comb out before but next time I will try the mayonaise. I think schools are the worst for spreading of lice - never even thought it could have been a cleaning problem - I just assumed that it was the lice running from one head to another and kids trying on eachothers hats etc. Fingers crossed that no one gets nits this school term! *scratches head*

good luck and hope you dont have to try it but if so the mayo does work. lice can live on alot of things for a short time. i know how horriable it is to feel liek you are fighting a losing battle with it. some cities are worse then others with it.

My boy got that once when they went to head start. They had an out break all the time at head start. I would no more then get rid of them and he would get it back so I never sent my other son the next year. I waited for kidergarten. You know more then get rid of it and they go to school and get it back. It cost so much cleaning up after that and the shampoo is out rages. I never want to get that again. My daughter has a ways before she goes to school. I am sure we will get it sometime in her school years. Some people don't care and don't treat themselves.

.... and it is those uncaring, untreating people who keep reinfesting everyone grrr - that makes me so cross! Maybe they should make the children spray their hair with lice preventative in the morning when school starts - wonder if that would bring the lice incidence down? - just a thought...
