I'm 23 and my generation has to work around so many changes...

I'm 23 years old. I graduated High School 5 years ago. Somehow, I feel like I'm 33 years old. The reason is because our generation had had to work around so many changes in the world. I mean, we grew up when home computers were starting to become a big deal and Myspace took over the world (lol), the Presidential Candidates were Black (partly) and a Woman...so many other changes.
I'm afraid to go back to school because I tried 3 times already and couldn't afford it, and the price just increases dramatically each year...
I'm so afraid of the future because I don't know if I'll have Social Security or if 401k's will even exist any longer...
I'm not sure if any company I EVER work for will ever offer me Health Insurance again because of the costs (it's not looking good so far with my job search). In fact, I've only ONCE had Dental Insurance!
I'm afraid that I won't be able to heat my home because of the oil prices...
I'm afraid to buy a home because I could either be stuck with the same home for a long time more than I expected because of Market Values.
I'm afraid to buy a home because I might not be able to afford it with all these random increases and I don't want to go into Bankruptcy or have to live with knowing I failed at owning a home.
I'm afraid to start a family because I don't want to be the mom who says "no you can't have a candy bar (at the store) because I can't afford it" and whole-heartedly mean it.
It's almost as if everything I was told about life "after high school" has completely changed.
Sure, I know this is how life is everywhere and has always been but it's very frightening for someone my age who would like to do the right thing and not have any stability in the world to know what the right thing is.

Hi, Dee!
All I can say is that you are not alone.
I'm a little bit older at 31, and I've done the higher education thing. I finally paid off the last of my student loans within the past few months, and my wife's loans are still being paid. We have two children under the age of five - and we can only imagine what life will be like in thirteen years when they start to set out on their own. (That's actually a scary thought... that it will only be thirteen years!)
You can take my two cents for what they are worth, but I found that a good book to read was The Richest Man in Babylon by George Classon. (I don't get any royalties from the sales, LOL - this is a genuine recommendation.) It's a financial education in story form which I enjoyed, and maybe it will help you find some answers or ideas on how you can move ahead without fear in living up to your hopes and dreams.
Again, you are not alone. I wish you well!

Thank you for responding! I will have to read that book. I guess it's just hard for me to realize that reality is tough!

Hello again, Dee.
I misspelled Clason. It's The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason.
I also wanted to say from the perspective of someone that is closer to 33 than 23, you have a writing style that is both interesting and engaging. You are a welcome addition to the myLot community, and I would not only encourage you to keep writing here - but even to consider ways to write professionally. I think you would do well.
Thanks for your discussions, Dee.

Thanks! That makes me happy to hear! I also write articles for college students (research papers) for money and I just began writing on Helium again. I decided to take a look at my ranking in here and noticed I'm doing pretty well! Wow! Didn't expect it at all! I have fun here, thanks for responding!
