How will you help a new member at the site?

It is always seen that the new members knows little about the site conditions and ways to hold a stand. Most of them leave after a couple of days. But there must be ways to hold them tight, guiding them through there struggle.
I have no suggestions for the newcomers as I am myself one. Will the senior members help them out?
