how can i teach my dog to be brave

my dog blacky is much better now, he come out of his kennel and plays around, if he sees a stranger he barks but if the stranger takes a stone or stick he just runs away fro mthe scene, is he afraid of being hurt, or are dogs like that, or is there any way i can teach him to be more brave and take on the stranger
