Last weekend, I spent most of my time on the internet at home, watching movies, and one of the movies I was able to watch was Penelope.
The movie was about the girl Penelope whose family was cursed because her great, great grandfather denied the housemaid of their family of marriage, since he was asked to choose between marrying the housemaid or his inheritance. So, he chose his inheritance, and the housemaid committed suicide.
The mother of the housemaid was a witch, so she cursed the first girl to be born in the family to be ugly. The curse would be broken if the girl would get married.
Of the many generations passed, Penelope (played by Christina Ricci) was the first girl born in the family. She grew up to be physically different from the rest of the world. Then her mother gave her a simulated environment of the “outside” world.
When she reached 18, her mother had this dating thing for her set-up. Penelope has this one-sided mirror where she could view her dates. Then when she feels like showing up herself, she would pop from nowhere. Anyways, there was one date where Penelope showed up and found her date to be hysterical after seeing her. The boy, Edward, belonged to a rich family.
Edward was so scared that he reported the incident to the authorities, and the authorities found this to be so insane.
To redeem himself, Edward found solace with a paparazzo who was hurt by Penelope’s mom when she was still a baby. This paparazzo wanted also revenge. Then they hired this certain Max who was into gambling and was about to go bankrupt.
This Max was played by James McAvoy. He was asked by Edward to be one of Penelope’s dates. So, to make the long story short, Max was able to get to know Penelope in a different way, then, one day Penelope decided to show her face to Max, this surprised Max.
Max’s reaction to Penelope somehow hurt the girl. All Max could say was he could not give Penelope the freedom she’s looking for.
Then Max disappeared from the picture, and Penelope explored the world. She left home and went to discover the world outside her comfort zones.:) Anyways, she met a friend (I forgot her name but was played by Reese Witherspoon). So, she went discovering the world blah, blah.:) Anyways, to cut everything short the curse was broken when Penelope told her mom that she loved the way she is and that no matter what, she is ok being her since the people already knew that she existed.
So, after she was transformed, she became a teacher, then one day she asked Reese to look for Max (who was then known to be Johnny). Then they found each other and declared love for each other:)
The story has a nanny mcphee-ish appeal because of the presence of witches/magic. Also, because of the idea of rewards to those who have good hearts. The OST of the movie is lovely aside from the piano play, you could also hear indie artists in the list.
So, try watching it.
To those who have watched it, what can you say about the movie and the actors? To those who have not watched it, based on my synopsis, you think this will be worth watching?

I just watched this movie last night. I loved it!
I liked that it was a magical fairy tale-type movie but wasn't too predictable.
I thought Christina Ricci did a fabulous job in it and I just realized where I've seen the actor who was playing Max...seeing his name typed in your article I remembered he was in Atonement. I loved him in both films.
It's a sweet movie with a great moral.

Yes, James McAvoy is the guy from Atonement, and he also partnered with Angelina Jolie in Wanted! :)

I watched the movie and it was balanced just right enough to indeed be watch-able. It is a cute modern fairy tale sort of story.
