Landmarks

July 19, 2008 6:35am CST
I have visited quite a few places that are considered to be a tourist landmark and found most to be pretty interesting or unusual to see. However, watching a programme last night they had a poll on where they asked 100 people to name the landmark they were most disappointed with and the Eiffel Tower came out top. I personally have been up this and thought it was very nice. Are there any landmarks or tourist attractions you visited expecting to be wowed and were disappointed by?

I liked the Eiffel Tower, the views are amazing. But I have to admit that after visiting that I didn't find the Empire State Building too exciting. Again, the view was good, but it seemed like just another tower really. I know that sounds a bit ungrateful and I wasn't really expecting it to be anything more than a tower, but it gets so romanticised in films that I thought it would somehow 'feel different'! Plus I think that I was a bit put off by the massive queue to get up there. One landmark I'd really like to get to some time is Stone Henge (...and of course Blackpool Tower - I've passed it but I've not been up there yet! I'm sure I wouldn't be disappointed with that.

Yes I would like to go to Stne Henge. I think the queues are alwasy off putting!! The thing that is different about Blackpool tower over Eiffel is that the Blackpool tower has lots of other attractions inside of it to see and do before you even go up it! So it's a good day!! Eiffel tower is more up and thats it! x

I don't know, I liked Blackpool Tower, let alone the Eiffel one. I'm easily pleased, though. But then, I'm also the person who's been back and forth to St Louis for going on seven years, and living here permanently now, and I still haven't been up the damned Arch ;)

Well thats the thing you see as they said that the Eiffel had nothing else but the tower which is why people weren't disappointed by the Blackpool tower as it has so much going on in the building it's in too! Personally I like them both! lol x

That always kills me. It's like the people who hike the first ten miles of the Appalachian Trail (one of the longest wilderness trail in the US), and then give up because 'it's not what they expected'. What were they expecting? Moving sidewalks? Likewise, it's the Eiffel Tower. It's been there a while. As far as I know, there's never been plans to put bowling alleys and a rollercoaster in the top ;)

I am very surprised to hear that people were disappointed by the Eiffel Tower. I think that it is a very interesting looking structure and it is just one of the amazing sites that a tourist can be in Paris. Maybe the people thought that it was expensive to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Which other landmarks did people find disappointing? I loved seeing the Mayan ruins in Tikal in Guatemala, climbing on of the temples to enjoy sunrise was a special experience that I will always treasure. I had a similar time seeing the Mayan ruins in Belize. There is was so exciting to hear a jaguar calling. Part of what I appreciated was the sense of peace and quiet and seeing only a small number of tourists. I went to Talum in Mexico early and it was fairly peaceful, however mid morning thousands of tourists arrived. All the loud crowds of people ruined the lovely atmosphere there.

Yes I can only think maybe price! I always think that too that when it is too crowded you cannot appreciate the sight for what it is or the way it was meant to be enjoyed. I plan to go to Chitchen Itza next year whilst in Mexico and am hoping that turns out to be as good as I hope for!

well tourist landmarks came to be because they are unique. i'm sure these landmarks became well known because everyone wants to see them. i would love to vist paris and i'm sure i'll go to the eiffel tower. it's more of a 'been here done that' thing than anything else. what were these people expecting of the eiffel tower? i have to say that it has been romanticised too much over the years. i guess i always travel with an open mind. what can i expect of a place that i've never been before? no expectations = no disappointments. cheers ;p

That is right - if you don't expect much you cannot be disappointed - only hopefully happy becuase it ended up being great! And yes a lot is because everyone wants to see them bu you're right that it might as well be done while you're there just in case you miss something that you could've ended up loving!

That's a good question. I think most of the landmarks I have visted did not disappoint. I think the Eiffel tower probably was not worth the wait in line. (I might just be upset about it because it was raining that day) and the Empire State Building while cool, is another one. The White House also is a long wait and you dont get to see alot. Overall I'm satisfied with the landmarks I've seen.

I think that is what the problem is with a lot is that the queues are so long that by the time you get in you are thinking is this worth the wait??! And then it's good but it seems like you waited ages for not much!! lol x

I took a trip to Wyoming. I'm sorry to offend anyone who might live there, or love it there. But, I had it in my head that there would be beautiful plateaus, and just great looking western land. It was flat and boring. South Dakota was beautiful, and the Black Hills were great, but that was it. I did get to go the Big Horn mountains to 4-wheel drive. But over all I was pretty dissapointed in Wyoming. I went as far as Gillette. I didn't want to see much more after I go there. I would still like to some day go to Yellowstone, but I'll have to be in the mood to go.

I think that is the problem sometimes with certain places that we visit isn't it?We build them up so much in our head that when we do eventually go we are not greeted by what we thought of in our minds and that kind of ruins the experience! x

I really think that when we prepare to go on a trip, then we should keep a more open mind. I really thought that Niagra Falls would just blow. I LOVED IT!!!! who woulda thunk it. I really want to go back, but I want to take my kids when they are a little older so they will really appriciate it.

Hi Frankiecesca, well, yes, there are a lot of tourists attractions are disappointing. I just came back from a two week trip inside my country and I visited the Terrycotta Warrior, but it was sor of diappointed, maybe because I had too much expectations before I went. But to my surprise, Lijiang is such a beautiful place that I didnt want to come back, and I am sure I will go back there someday, I just love that place! I hope you will somday visit there too, you will love it too! And it was very spectatular view on the top of Hua Mountain too, it is also in China :) I just realized that there are so many fabulous places in my country that i need to go and visit, that will keep me busy for years I guess :)

I can't think of any off hand. I have been to a few places that were considered tourist landmarks. I've been to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, International Peace Gardens, Garden of the Gods, Lookout Mountain and those are just a few. I have loved each and every place I have visited.

I went about 6 years ago so I don't think that was there. That might have been kind of cool!

Oh yes, extremely! My hubby, daughter and I recently took a trip to Washington DC and loved it there. It was so beautiful and had a lot to see. I loved seeing the White House because it wasn't as big as I expected it to be. I even went to see Lincoln and loved being in that historical site. The capitol was great and was tons of fun with all the things that they had in the basement. The Washington Monument was a big disappointment. It was just a really big stone. Some of the names of the heroes couldn't be seen because it was too high up. There wasn't anything really exciting about it. I haven't been to places overseas, but I can tell you that Disney could have made something better and more memorable. I'm not I'm taking away from anything there, but felt it could be more. I love this country and all it stands for.

I would love to go there as it does look gorgeous! Shame it wasn't what you had expected entirely though but hey at least you had a great time! : )
