I do the same too but when I'm rendering videos, which takes a long time to do, I turn off the lights and I sleep while the computer is rendering. The extra light does reduce the strain on my eyes.

I don't, I changed my monitor settings to darker. A contractor we used to work with us on programming financial programs for our company always had a gray background when working in programs like for example Excel, when everybody else used white. Everybody wondered about it and I was finally curious enough to ask him. He said that the white background is bad on your eyes and a grayish background is easier if you have to stare at the computer for such a long time each day. He showed me how to change the settings in several programs, and you know, he was right.
