We all know some of the well known proverbs like "You have to take the good with the bad", "You can't get blood from a stone", " You can't have it both ways", or "All good things come to those who wait". But have you ever hear of ones that aren't so well known? Do you have a proverb you wish to share? Here is one that I just recently learned ... A wise lawyer never goes to law himself. Meaning those who practice the law and understand the cost involved know better than to rely upon themselves.

My gran's advice when I got married the first time comes to mind. "If you lay a man like you lay linoleum, you can walk on him too, for thirty years". I wish I'd understood her better then, and put her little proverb to good use! LOL

How bout, a drunk man's words are a sober man's thoughts? Or, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. That's my fave. Toooooo true, yes?

Well there is another one similar to the lawyer one that goes something like a doctor is his own worst patient. One of my other favorites is being caught between a rock and a hard place or you can't have your cake and eat it too. Who knows what they all really mean and yet they often fit so well in situations where no other words seem as valuable.

hi dear some provrbs that i recollect no so common are "Discretion is the better part of valor": If you say discretion is the better part of valor, you mean that avoiding a dangerous or unpleasant situation is sometimes the most sensible thing to do..."Faint heart never won fair lady": To succeed in life one must have the courage to pursue what he wants...."Every cloud has a silver lining": If you say that every cloud has a silver lining, you mean that every sad or unpleasant situation has a positive side to it. If you talk about silver lining you are talking about something positive that comes out of a sad or unpleasant situation...."Fire is a good servant but a bad master" Fire, like any other manmade tool or device, will serve man well only when it is controlled and used wisely. have a nice day..

I looked up "proverbs" and I found this one "The boy is father to the man" and to be quite honest, I have no idea what it means...Any clues?

The boy is father to the man is not in my dictionary of proverbs. but I do got " don't overload gratitude;if you do, she'll kick." They have some pretty weird ones in this book of over 1700. I wonder if I'll ever be able to use them . LOL!!!

There are some really good ones here that I've never heard before! I've been racing my brain for some others but I've drawn a blank unless this counts as a proverb. I forget the exact wording but it's about a drunk or high person who "went to be with a 10 at 2 and woke up with a 2 at 10!" I'm happy to say that never happened to me! Annie

There are a couple of good ones my Grandad used to use You can teach a student but you cannot teach them much - meaning kids think they know everything more or less If you pished (peed) in one hand and thought in the other which would be foolish first - this was normally used when trying to explain that you did something foolish cos you though such and such Have you heard of those? lol xxx

You can lead a horse to water, but can't make it drink. This means you can help someone as much as possible, but they have to cooperate and help themselves.

I have some proverbs that I love. As you sow, so shall you reap. Birds of a feather flock together. Garbage in, garbage out. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. If a job is worth doing, it's worth doing well. Laughter is the best medicine.

"Is better a bird in the hand than two birds flying" Well this is a translation from my country, and it means that sometimes we must be satisfied with what we have or we might keep nothing at all.

I don't really have any proverbs on the tip of my tongue or brain. There is something about a contentious woman.. I think it means something about men only being happy when their wives are happy... but I can't recall it.
