What a spectacular sight! Did they say anything about what they thought it might be? The red ring around it looks like ???fire???

It's basically a stellar nursery, where stars are being formed. The ring is dust that is coalescing into new stars.

I have found this explanation for this photo in some site: What it actually depicts is the so-called Helix Nebula, described by astronomers as "a trillion-mile-long tunnel of glowing gases." At its center is dying star which has ejected masses of dust and gas to form tentacle-like filaments stretching toward an outer rim composed of the same material. Our ownsun may look like this in several billion years. I hope that can help all of you to now that. Thanks for the response and have a nice day.

The Helix Nebula? Yeah, I've seen that. The email that goes with it is kind of inaccurate though, if it's the one that's been doing the rounds since 2003. It's not a single image but a composite of several shots from the Hubble, it doesn't actually appear in those colours, but was tinted for visibility, and it's not something 'that you only see once in 3,000 years', as the email claims. It's visible all the time. As Nebulas go, it's actually fairly unimpressive compared to the Crab Nebula (http://tinyurl.com/35qlfu ), Horsehead Nebula (http://tinyurl.com/6ye4b6 ), or the one in Orion (http://tinyurl.com/2wp3wo ). Or indeed, quite a few others make it look a bit small and drab. The whole 'eye' thing is a bit fanciful to me, unless God's been smoking a lot of pot of late; it's rather bloodshot looking. People have been seeing things in clouds for quite some time; these clouds are just a bit further away.

It's awesome. I downloaded that pic a few years ago. My niece was into astronomy so I emailed to her. She just loved it!

Well, I really don't know why people always have to go for this humanoid notions. Is it really necessary for God to have eyes like us? This photo should be appreciated for what it is, in reality-which is that it's a really beautiful spiral galaxy, and nothing else.
