Is Alcohol depressant or stimulant?

Way back from my college years until I reviewed for my local board exam, still during my reviews for my CGFNS and NCLEX-RN exams, I knew for a fact that alcohol belongs to the group of depressants unlike cocaine which belongs to the stimulants. I was able to answer with the said facts in mind for the 3 exams I fortunately passed. Yet, at an unpredictable instance, I myself have proven that it is a stimulant for some. Are you convinced that I was able to talk to a drunk relative today and for the fact that I know he is so emotionally driven with his stories, accidentally he noticed something that i in the state of so much alertness and wakefulness so to speak did not even observe. Hahaha. As the saying goes, everything has exemption! Is he exempted to the fact that has been proven by my pharmacology and psychiatric books? Any other experience you can share that is similarly relevant?
