I am here to let everyone know to make sure the batteries in your smoke alarm is working, yesterday we had a situation that could of been a lot worse than what it was, seems hubby went into the bathroom and he took his cigeratte, he has an ashtray that sits ontop the heater, course the heater is not on this time of year. He also has a towel he leaves on the floor for the dog, the dog likes to go in there and lay, my opinion is the floor is cool, and that is why he likes it, but hubby thinks he needs a towel to lay on instead of the bare floor. Hubby butted his cigarette, and came out, we have this cat, who apparently seen the smoke coming from the butted cigarette and he ran jumped at the smoke as it curled up into the air, spilling the ashtray onto the towel. Right next to the towel, was the waste paper basket, and he keeps one of those plastic grocery bags in it for a liner, the towel caught on fire, next setting the plastic bag in the wastebasket afire and all I know is when I finally heard the smoke alarms going off, and opened my eyes the bedroom was completely filled with smoke. All I could think was to get out, I came rumming out into the hall way, yelling for my husband, who said, IT'S OUT, OUT WHAT THE HELL IS OUT! The entire house was filled with dense smoke, he was opening the windows and doors trying to get it out, the smoke was so bad that it was billowing out of the doors and windowns,I had to go outside and sit for quite a while, it burned a hole in the bathroom floor, and now the whole house smells of smoke from a fire. I wonder what had happen had he gone back and laid down, went to sleep, my house coat was just above the trash can on a hook. It could of been a real fire to take everything we owned. I dont' think I actually knew what the meaning of having smoke detectors working untill yesterday. Oh yes we all catch some thing on the stove when we cook either too hot or whatever and it sets the smoke alarm off, but let me tell you there is a huge difference when you open your eyes and see the room filled with smoke, and hear that alarm going off. So please people see that you have fresh batteries in your smoke alarms and that they are working good, you never know when you will need them, and I see so many stories about the house that burnt had no working smoke detectors. The life you save just might be your own.

Yeah, it's better to be prepared than deal with the consequence later. Checking everything in the house is a sign of precaution. Sometimes we tend to forget minor details because we are busy. Not a good excuse i know. You are right, batteries in smoke alarms should be check regularly.

That could have been a lot worse than it was, it was lucky that you both found it in time. All our smoke alarms work the batteries are checked and changed regularly and we are pretty cautious. I know that does not mean we are safe but we do know the smoke alarms all work.

Wow, that sounds like you made a narrow escape. I would have been panicking as well. And it is a good reminder for all of us to be vigilant about our smoke detectors. I live in an apartment and every other month, maintenace is required to come in all of our apartments and check on our smoke detectors, see if they need new batteries, and see if they are working correctly. I'm glad it is something I don't even have to think about.

I must agree with you on this discussion for it is extremely important to have all your smoke detectors working correctly in case of a fire they will alert you. I live in a complex apartment building and we have some detectors in all the apartments and a major fire alarm system out in the hallways like the ones they have in public buildings, stores, schools, ect. Every year they come around to the buildings to test these alarms in the hallways and our apartments. I feel good knowing they do this. I am glad everything turned out ok and nothing major happend.

Yes I ask the landlord one time if there was a firewall between the apartments as I don't know what he people next to me are doing and he said no, so if ours went then I assume all would of went untill they could get it under control, one good thing the fire department is just across the street.
