I am not much of a writer, I can't type fast enough to get my scattered thoughts down, but these short little messages seem to just fit the bill. I think I could write stories for small children with lots of pictures. Has anyone been able to grow from a short, short writer into someone who can communicate in this venue?

I haven't done this personally. I write articles for online publications. But I think you should go for it if its something you are passionate about. You know if you have what it takes. If so, put yourself out there and see what happens. You could always try self publishing with a place like lulu.com at first. See what people think about your work.
If you do submit stories to "real" publishers don't get discouraged by rejections. Every writer goes through them. Just keep trying.
I wish you all the best.
