Another way to measure how healthy you are?

I have heard from so many people that the old BMI (Body Mass Index) system is quite outdated and shouldn't even be used today because it is so squewed from where we really should be to be defined as healthy. If we can't go by the scale and we can't go by a person's BMI is there another way to measure how fit we are and what we need to do (how much weight we need to lose etc...) other than BMI?Thanks Zelo

Me I just go by the measureing tape and scale. That is how I measure my health and by how I feel and by what the doctor says. Right now my body mass is more then 60 which isn't good. But I have heard of skinny people being out of shape to. I don't really know how to measure my health meter any other way. The scales number and the tape measure is the only thing I go by.

Yes I have been using a tape and also the way the clothes I own fit on me. My shoulders have broadened (gain weight) and my waist has shrunk (lost weight). Some of my clothes that used to feel 'just right' are now feeling kinda... funky on me... just not sitting right or something so the whole shape of my body is changing... not shrinking per se but changing... for the better. Keep working at eating healthy, drinking plenty of fluids, and getting that 30 minutes of excercise in everyday. My house is more clean than it has ever been because that most definately counts as exercise and there is an added benefit to it as well! Thanks Zelo

Hey thanks for the best response I appreciate it alot. My house actually gets cleaner when I am listening to music that makes me want to move. My husband hates my music...and so when he is home it has to stay off. I have recently purchased a Schwinn bike to be able to get some good exercise. Something about a stationary bike that is boring and so I bought one with the help of my mom and husband to help me get fit..

You should check out sparkpeople.com it offers a lot of articles and tools to help track your health, including recipes that you can substitute certain things for other things. I also suggest reading mercola.com because he has a lot of great information on staying healthy. Specifically, www.mercola.com/nutritionplan/index.htm which tells you detailed information about Insulin Levels, Weight, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol Levels. It would require you to get tested by the doctor for all of those things, but you can buy his non-condensed Nutrition Plan and it will tell you specifically what you need to do to maintain your health and weight. Other than that, I'm not really familiar with any other system.

I am with a personal trainer right now who measures me every three weeks or so to keep a chart of how I am doing... I am looking to see if there is something I can do other than stepping on a scale to get some type of feedback as to how I am doing. I will take a look at the site you mentioned. Thanks Zelo
