You can always use a knife and take your eye balls off. Just kidding, a great method that helps prevent the burning is chew gum while peeling the onions, I'm not 100% sure how this happens but it really helps me and a lot of people I know who peel onions.

There are a few ways to do this. One of them is to cut them under running water. The other is to soak them in ice water after you peel them. Soak them in the cold water or iced if possible, for a short while before cutting them. This will reduce the fumes that comes out of the onion when chopping. The other way is to cook them first. The cut them.

Hi sweetbarbie22, some says soak it in water then put a salt beside your chopping board before slicing the onions. Well I have a hard time cutting onions too and I almost cry doing this things at our kitchen.

Keep the onion in the fridge till you use it. Cut out the core of it then soak the onion in cold water for about 5 minutes. That will keep it from burning your eyes and making you tear up!

Put an unburnt match under your tongue while you cut the onion. I guarantee it will work; I do it all the time.

When I was a kid, I saw these matchbox with some "ideas" on how to get rid of the teary-eyes in peeling onions, it says: place the matchstick in your arm pit. LOL, kinda silly huh ? As a kid, well, I was actually twelve then, when my mom teaches and helped me in the kitchen, I just did what that matchbox has to say, as expected still sting is on the eye. Recalling that, what was the connection with the matches and the armpit and the onion, silly me... hehehe. Anyway, I usually washed onions before I cut it out, the presence of a nearby water would eventually lessen that burning sting in the eye, that makes you "cry", that was effective on me as how I observed it. Hope it works on you too.. Happy mylotting to you and have a good day !

I wear glasses so I don;t get irritated by onions. I saw it once on tv that lighting up a candle while chopping onions reduces that effect. Chefs on the other hand suggest that you just slice them quick so that the juices form the onions would not evaporate and go to your eyes.

If you keep the onion together while your are cutting it, less juice gets out to burn your eyes. Also after your done, if you rub a spoon on your hands while you are washing them, it helps remove the smell of the onion from your hands.
