Do you have smoke detectors in your house. If you do, when do you check their battery? Mine in my house are wired in so I didn't think they had a battery. I was wrong..... fortunately I learned this before they were needed! I now check the batteries every year.

I have smoke detectors in my house and recently they went off at 3 in the morning. I contacted my landlord later that day and he sent someone around and they changed the whole thing and now they are fine. I think the battery in yours is like a back up should you have a power cut then the detectors will still work. I recommend that you change your battery every year which sounds like you are already doing. If they were just relying on the battery alone it would beep to inform you that it needs to be changed.

I use alkaline batteries in my smoke detector. When the batteries start to get low the detector emits a 'beep' every 20 seconds until the batteries are removed and replaced. This way I don't need to check my batteries. The detector checks them for me.

I do have smoke detectors. I change my batteries twice a year when the time changes for daylight savings. That way I always remember to do it.
The local fire departments usually go around to areas that are populated with older residents and low income in there area's to make sure they get them changed twice a year too. Which I think is a very good idea. Some of the older residents just aren't capable of changing the batteries or getting out to get them, or they just forget to do it.
