Today is National Hot Dog Day - July 23rd

United States
July 23, 2008 6:40am CST
I was undecided about what to have for dinner, but after learning this, it helped me make up my mind!!! National Hot Dog Day celebrates one of America's favorite summer sandwiches. It is only fitting that this dog gets its day. Its summertime. Hot dogs are center stage on the grill, and at picnics all across America. They are at the ballpark. They are sold from carts on street corners in every city. It's not hard to find them. We consume hundreds of millions of hot dogs on the Fourth of July alone. Enjoy National Hot Dog Day to the fullest. Have a couple of hot dogs for lunch or dinner. And, don't forget to cook a few on a stick at the evening campfire. What's in a hot dog? Don't ask, and we won't tell. Sometimes, its best if you don't know. I only eat Kosher Hot Dogs or all beef hot dogs, just one of my little hang ups. The companion for National Hot Dog Day is National Mustard Day. How many Hot Dogs do we eat? We consume so many hot dogs, in so many venues, that the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council hesitates to forecast consumption. But, it does report that each year we buy over 837 million packages of hot dogs at retail outlets, and over 24 million hot dogs at baseball stadiums alone. Why do hot dogs at football and baseball games always taste better? I can't figure this one out!!! Here is a link for hot dog trivia http://www.hunterhome.net/triviajuly05.html! Now you can dazzle your friends. What is your favorite brand of hotdog? I like BallPark or Hebrew National. I am partial to Ball Park because last year they were having an instant win contest and I was able to win my oldest a Nintendo DS game. We sure did eat a lot of hot dogs last summer.LOL What do you like to put on your hot dog? I have two favorites" 1) yellow mustard and raw onions or 2) a chili, onion, cheese dog (the sad thing is that I only started eating them a couple of years ago. Boy was I missing something great). Happy National Hot Dog Day!

Hi Kimbers! I think I'm going to celebrate the day by having a yummy coney dog from Arf'n'Barf. I mean Soggy Dog. Dangit......Dog 'n' Suds! They have the best coney dogs in this town and have had for many years. I'm going to have to try the Ball Park and Hebrew National hot dogs (or franks). The other brands I get at the store are way too salty for me...ugh. I like to put mustard, ketchup, pickle relish, and chopped onions on my hot dogs. I also like slaw dogs and it has to be the creamed slaw, not vinegar. I've not had one of those in eons. Hot dogs really taste best cooked on a grill!!!

LOL, so what is the name of the place that has the best coney dogs? I have never had one!!! Oh yeah, grilled dogs are the best. I think you will like both, neither one is salty. Thanks for the response!

I love hot dogs. Is it true that hot dogs are from cultured worms. Ewwww...gross, if that is true. I hope not. It's one of my favorite foods.

hot dogs are made from he meat trimmings are carefully selected just like the meat you buy in your grocer's coolers. A meat fat, a cereal filler which could be either bread crumbs, flour, or oatmeal, a little bit of egg white, and a mouth-watering array of herbs and seasonings including garlic, pepper, ground mustard, nutmeg, salt, and onion are added before the are put in the casings . http://www.coolquiz.com/trivia/explain/docs/hotdog.asp

Thanks for the response. I see deebomb answered your question. I know there are chicken franks and turkey franks. I won't even try them. I know a lot of kids like them. My girls were brought up on all beef hot dogs.

I read the trivia questions and did very poorly. The only thing that I knew was that the hot dog was put on buns at St. Louis "Louisiana Purchase Exposition" in 1904. I'm like you and will only eat the ball park franks and the Hebrew National. my granddaughter like the chicken dog, but to me they are just gross. I just realized that I haven't seen any commercials for hot dogs this year. They usually are all over the place. I like mustard and ketchup and some time chili and cheese on my hot dogs. I also like to put the mustard on one side and ketchup on the other then turn the dog to mix them. When I was a kid I could eat a ½ dozen of them.

Hi kimbers867. Hotdogs are fun to eat, aren't they? I ate alot of them in my younger years, but I sure don't eat them very often now. I used to eat all beef ones, but now, on a rare occasion, I'll grab the turkey hotdogs. I like mustard and onions on my hotdogs. But yes, the chili and cheese dogs with onion are something special.

I remember as a kid eating them once a week. It was a cheap dinner. When I told DH what was for dinner he immediately asked if I had any chili. I guess we will be going chili cheese dogs, which is fine with me. I just need to get down to the store to pick up a couple of cans and some 'nilla ice cream. I am trying to kick a very very bad headache. I have tried migraine excedrin, laying down, eating lunch; and nothing is helping. Hopefully it will go away soon!

Hope your headache is gone by now. If not, the ice cream might lick it (pun intended). So, chili cheese dogs it is. Sounds good. Headache, be gone!

Well, since it is National Hot Dog Day I might just have to serve my kids some hot dogs for dinner tonight. I have a package in the fridge already. I could serve them up with some mac and cheese.

Lilybug, I was debating over pork tenderloin or hotdogs for dinner until I read about National Hot Dog Day! My girls think I am crazy, LOL. But it's fun. My oldest said she wasn't eating hot dogs but when I told her that her dad wanted chili she was like "OK".

Today is National Hot dog day! - what do you think of this holiday? have you ever seen a hot dog car in real life? I haven't and hope never to see one.
This is a ridiculous holiday. but I like to eat beef or turkey hot dogs. I like them as chili dogs, or just ketchup dogs. I am not one of those people who get fancy with hot dogs. there's way better taster food to get everything on it.

hot dogs - a hot dog
Hello Gosh, I had no idea that today was national hot dog day, and to boot on my cousin's 30 birthday I will be sure to tell her for a laugh . I had hot dogs earlier this week, so maybe that counts just a little bit . I like my hot dogs grilled with some cheese, or with mustard, i also enjoy a good chili dog too sometimes

I'm not a big hot dog fan, but I will eat them if they have been grilled. I like mine with mustard, no ketchup, and sometimes pickle relish. I used to fix hot dogs when the kids were little, but they are all grown now, so I never fix them. I watch the show "Sunday Morning" and not long ago one of the guys went to "Hot Dog University" to learn how to cook hot dogs from a stand on the street like in New York and other cities. It was interesting and fun to watch! Best Wishes!

Umm-mmm hot dogs. It's too bad they are so bad for you. I love them. I like mine with onions, ketchup and mustard. I will also eat my dogs with sauerkraut if it is available. I tried buying veggie or smart dogs at Trader Joes, but they were pretty bad compared to the real thing, even the dog wouldnt eat them. I love bratwurst also. Bratwurst is just a bigger sausagey version of a hot dog. They are good also.
