Mystery of the 10 WOODEN CHIPS! can you solve it?

when i was in my college years, one of my bestfriend gave us a mystery to solve. THE MYSTERY OF THE 10 WOODEN CHIPS. the scene: a man was found dead inside a tent, holding a gun, about a meter or so from where he was found lying was a table with 10 wooden chips scattered on top. the clues: 1. he did commit suicide 2. he never saw the 10 wooden chips at the top of the table. the big question: why did he committed suicide? how to solve the mystery: ALL MYLOTTERS ARE INVITED TO JOIN. i would really appreciate it if you would. you can ask me questions that are answerable by YES or NO only. i will provide some more clues if you are on the right track. this is really a tough one so i'm giving you all guys 3 days to solve it before i post the answer.
