Should we be allowed to name our children any name we choose?

An article that I read at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080724/ap_on_re_au_an/new_zealnad_bizarre_names suggests that a judge got so furious over a name that was given to a child that he made her a ward of the court so that her name could be changed. What do you think about parents naming their own children? Do they have the right to pick the names, even if it is bizarre? I would like to discuss this and see what most people think.

I would like to say yes. However, we are living in a time of all kinds of strange and insensitive people. Therefore, I will have to say no. People are so out of control. Children are not toys and playthings and things we use to get attention with.

OMG, it's the first time I heard of parents name their children like that. Before reading the news, I thought "It's the parents' right what to name their children. How worse could that get?" Oh my, the judge is definitely correct. To quote Judge Murfitt: "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily." If that's the case then there should be something done about it. I can't imagine what psychological torture those child have gone or are going through. Thanks for sharing this news. :)

Some names are just downright embarrassing for a kid so im kinda inbetween on the issue you know. Most of the time I think we should be allowed to name our children what we choose.

Of course parents should be able to name their own children. Each person has their own culture and beliefs and should be able to live with them. If we left it up to the government they would just give us numbers as names, which they do anyway when you are born haha. So if they can give your children a number, why shouldn't we at least give them a name to live with haha.
