Does anyone know this book?

I posted a few days ago about whether anybody knew of a website where I could briefly describe the plot of a book that I read a few years ago, and would like to read again -- except I can not remember either the title or the author of the book. I received a number of responses to my question, and some people suggested that I post the info I remember here to see if anyone on MyLot might be able to help. So here goes -- This is what I remember: The wealthy husband of a woman who has been a socialite (in New York City?) dies and does not leave her money. If I remember she was somehow cheated out of the money or will or something. Many of her former friends turn against her. She has to find a place to live and significantly alter her lifestyle. If I remember correctly, she finds a job working as a salesperson in a department store. I think that at the end she somehow manages to turn the tables on the people who had cheated her, but I don't relly remember how. All of this is kind of a growth experience for her and that is why I am interested in re-reading the book. So, does this sound familiar to anyone?

i am sorry i dont know the book, however if you are looking into reading a great book that empowers, i would highly reccomend the book called "the red tent" that is a good book. and worth passing it on. now it is based on people from the bible, but it is a great book. it doesnt read like what you would expect, it is a great page turner. but if you have you heart set on the other one, good luck in finding it.

Thank you, Pukaprat2, but I have already read The Red Tent. I really enjoyed that book also, but this book is totally different as it takes place in contemporary USA as opposed to biblical times.

I know of one book that sounds something like this one. Could it be Social Crimes, by Jane Hitchcock? Let me know if this is the book you are talking about. I hope that it is. I know how frustrating it is to have something in your mind and you just can't remember it. Happy reading!

A thousand thanks to you!!!! You are absolutely right. The book I was thinking about was Social Crimes by Jane Hitchcock. The minute I read your response I knew it sounded familiar so I checked on Amazon.com and recognized the book immediately. I am absolutely floored that you were able to recognize the book from my description. I am also floored because I posted this discussion not really expecting to receive a correct response. I really thought the effort was futile, but thought it was worth a shot -- no matter how unlikely to be successful. I will never underestimate the power of MyLot again!! Thank you again.
