Talula does The Hula

I just read that a New Zealand judge made a girl a ward of the court so he could change her name. It was Talula does The Hula. The 9 year old was so embarrassedd about her name that she didn't share it with friends. I am so glad the judge got her the name she wanted. The article didn't say what it was but I Know it is better than Talula...Question. do you like the name your parents gave you? If not, would you change it? I must confess Sarah isn't the name on my birth certificate but it is the name I always wanted so I use it here.Even though I hate, hate my real name, it was my mother's favorite girl name. She told me she named me before I was born. She didn't have the test to know the gender of the baby so she was really wanting the baby to be a girl. And now that she has passed away I don't have the heart to legally change my name. How about you?

first i am glad that judge helped that child. there are children who were given a name as a joke by their parents and it is so wrong. the poor children. my name kathleen, i didn't like as a child. but i was called kathy and that was better. but when i became an adult i heard irish people say kathleen and it sounded good. that gave me a different look at my name. i don't mind it now. but i am usually called kathy.

Lost all my response again before posting it so will try and get it right second time!! This seems to be a craze in New Zealand. Did you also hear about the couple that called their child 'No 16 Bus Shelter' and the court did not stop that!! Parents of twins that wanted to call them Fish and Chips were not allowed though! I am not very keen on my middle name but don't have to use it too often luckily.

I did change my name. My birth name was Marigold Awakening. I changed it to Cyndi when I was 16. My oldest brother had it worse than i did, though. he was born, Summer in the moonlit garden. He went by Summer until he was 10 when he decided he would be called bryan. The folks indulged him. When he was 17 he legally changed his name.

And your parents were okay with you changing your name? That's great.by the time I was 16, I was resigned to the fact that I was stuck with my real name. But now I can use Sarah here and other places. That's is sooo great.

Oh yeah. My folks were pretty much cool with everything as long as we thought it through and followed our hearts. My brother Darren was the only one of us who kept his name. Darren in the Winter Snow, and he uses the whole thing. LOL. He's a character.

I am glad they changed the name too poor little thing. I also did not appreciate my real name when my mother named me.....Jill is my pen name.....so I use it here. But as I have gotten older....I have become accustomed to it and so it's really not that bad. Jill is the name a friend gave me and I like it better then my real name!

My name isn't my favorite, and I could very well change it if I wanted to but I really don't want to. I think the worst thing about my name is not my first or middle but my last name. I will be getting married soon so my last name will become my middle name, not as bad but still not my favorite.

I love my name, I do not share it on mylot for personal reasons (I am afraid of stockers), but my name is great. How these parents can give their children such terrible names is ridiculous? Those children have to live with those names for the rest of their lives. I already know the name that I want for my children. Katherine will be my daugther's name, and Thomas will be my son's name.

I am also very happy to hear that that girl got to change her name. The courts were right in letting that girl change her name. She should not have had to live with a name like that.

I don't mind my name...wouldn't have a clue what name I would prefer. The story goes was that my father was a Gone With The Wind fan, so named me Melanie. When my mother called my great-grandmother up to tell her the decided name, she remarked "Why are you calling her that down south name for?" LOL...I guess Melanie is popular in the southern states. I did get a bit of ridiculing though about my name, cause at the time, it just wasn't popular..no one had heard of it...being surrounded by Marys, Janes, Jennifers..and don't ask how my name was mispronounced, even by my teachers...sheesh

don't get me started on how my real name is misspelled or mis pronounced. So I spend my time defending a name I hate.

Some parents just have no class at all. What a tag to stick on a little child. Yes, I am going to change my name as old as I am. I am going to change it to the name my Birth Mother wanted me to have. The name that was on my original birth certificate. It is expensive on my tight budget, so I am saving up for it and will do it after the first of next year! Shalom~Adoniah

I believe a child needs to feel like they have someone in their corner. I am pleased to hear that the judge is in her corner. A name should not a statement , but your first gift to your child. I personally would not change my name.

I have a pretty normal name (Lisa). It's ok. My middle name though is the same as the county I was born in though, for some odd reason (Marin). My mom says it was after a lady who was very important in the area but, who knows. My daughter has a very traditional name but at the same time it is original too. People might give her a hard time about it when she gets into high school but it's not something she will be made fun of for either. I am given a little bit of a hard time because people always want to know why I named her what I did. I named her after Spider Man's girl friend, for those of you who know the comics/movies (Mary-Jane).

I've grown to like my name. I write it the way I like it and that's what I go by. I look at the good things about my name. People think it's a neat name, although you hear it more than you use to it is still a less common name and whenever someone finds out my name I get serenaded! My son is the one with the unusual name, but not so unusual that he wants to change it. His first name is spelled differently than others with a very common name and his middle name is Storm.

Patsy is the name of a great and beloved country music star, Patsy Cline. And let me tell you, she wasn't a pushover.

I read that too! I have a very long name but it does not make me embarassed. And I thank God for not making my parents play on my name, I wouldn't want to have a "Talula does the Hula" name. I have 3 names with a total of 19 letters, well that does not include my mother's surname and my father's. If I'll include that I'll have a grand total of 30 letter. Too long? Yes! But I'll never change it. Because that is my identity and I even write it all whenever I have to. And it's also nice because I can play with my names and get lots of nicknames. :)

I've never been crazy about my name, Judy, but, I realize it could be worse! It's just not a name I would have chosen if we could choose our own names. But what's always bothered me more than the name is WHY I was named that. My brother is six years older than I am, and when I was born my parents more or less let HIM name me. Judy happened to be the name of a girl he had a crush on (now again this was at the age of 6, I think she was actually a bit older than him), so they named me that. In my opinion this is a really bad way to choose a baby's name. It's not fair, for one thing, because I never had a younger sibling to name, and my brother got a name chosen by our parents, not by me or some other six-year-old. It's just always bugged me that my parents didn't have some name THEY liked that they chose that and instead just let my name for life be because of some passing fancy of my then six-year-old brother.

Yes.It sounds like they didn't want to name you so they got your brother to name you. Well it could be worse. When I was 6, I loved The book Harry The Dirty Dog, so if I were you older sister, you would have been named Henrietta.
