For those of you who read my discussion "Gee, I Have A Mystery On My Hands Here" where I got that rather cryptic email message from my friend Lisa....the email that went like this... B4 your mom passed away, she was aware of the storage bin in her name. There was a reason for this. Please don't tell them that she has passed away. I have contacted them and directed all calls to me. I'm paying it monthly. So there is no need to worry. Well I finally heard from Lisa..again she's cryptic and didn't go into details but by logic and my calculating mind I guessed as to the how and why of it all. As some of my responders surmised, there wasn't any grand fortune of my mother's mysteriously stored away in that storage bin and was actually property that belonged to Lisa herself and she was paying for it in my mother's name and behalf... Drat...So much for having a hidden treasure worth millions....LOL..gee can't get my Lear Jet and yacht now...hehe Around the time of the last year of my mother's life, Lisa was declaring bankruptcy. Now I personally know how bankruptcy works, since my mother had to declare it herself in 1987. Consequently...and technically speaking there was some money left to both my mother and myself via her Aunt Dorothy....a fairly sizable sum. However, the bankruptcy lawyer advised AGAINST probating the will and trying to get the money since if the creditors that my mother owed money to got wind of this money, even though she had declared bankruptcy would go after that money like vultures and we would be left with zilch (my mother was in debt for $45,000). If I'm remembering correctly bankruptcy will show up in a credit report for at least seven years...during that seven year period if any financial assets are found, the creditors could still go after it and take their share of it. So........Lisa, who didn't elaborate in her email (AGAIN) has some kind of assets and/or property (she didn't tell me what) that could be turned into cash assets and/or seized by the creditors even though she filed bankruptcy. So the deal was, was that Lisa would get a storage bin to contain this property, but rather than have it in HER name, that is why she asked my mother to have it in her name so the creditors couldn't track it down. Now....hmmm.....wonder if I could go after Aunt Dorothy's money.....heehee..it would have been turned over to the state since she died around 1985, but I might be able to claim it..any ideas on this venture? I'm not a "blood" relative but still have a copy of Aunt Dorothy's will and I am named in it. Well so much for the mystery... Okay to turn this into a discussion...did you ever have what you thought was an "exciting" family mystery on your hands and it turned out to be a ...well.... dud?

No but I am glad you found out somewhat about it. and if it has been over 7 yreas I think I would try to get the money owed you from Aunts will as you are named in it but then ya need to talk to a lawyer about it to see if would be profitable to go after it.

No nothing like that has ever happened to us here. I have a mom with a vivid imagination who would like to think that people owe her money. I am glad you got things straightened out.

I swear teapot...we're related. My mother had that frame of mind also that "society" and people owed her as well and it wasn't beneath her to actually steal money..Years and years ago, she was visiting a neighbor of ours. The woman, Pat went to the bathroom, when she came out she caught my mother's sticky finger n her purse trying to take Pat's money...I was told this by a mutual friend of Pat's and mine...my mother had NO guilt about it either that she was trying to steal the money from Pat

Why did they do such a thing? What it has taught us was not to be like them.

I do think you should go for it! I know you could really use the money and it's just sitting somewhere in a bank...doing nothing. You are the rightful heir anyhow. No exciting family secrets here...or at least that haven't presented themselves yet LOL

I thought it would be something like that. Very interesting though about your Auntie's money though, if there was anything that you could claim there then I would be tempted to look into it. I have not yet come across any interesting family mysteries yet, but maybe I will one day.

pye my mystery was anything but exciting it was heart breaking and sickening and made me dispise my fathet even more. he siref two children out of wedlock from a dutch servant girl of 16living as a servant with him and his current wife, and my mom was also a servant this was on a census. my pious dad, was a hypocrite who was married not twice but three times, mymom was the third. well the dutch girl married my fathers son from his first marriage then they went on to adopt the two illegitimate girls as my mom refused to have them in our house, I did not know why at the time as I was just six, now I know and feel for my mom.his second wife could not bear kids so after ten years he divorced her and married my mom well I am glad for one thing that i am here, but sad that my mom had mostly a miserable marriage with my much older father.

Aw Sorry you didn't get your fortune. Since you are named in the will, you might be able to go after it. I think you would have to talk to a probate lawyer to get a definite answer though. Can't hurt to try!

I've never had anything mysterious happen to me. I guess I lead a dull life! I'm glad to hear that you figured out the mystery though. I think you should go after your Aunt Dorothy's money. If you have a copy of the will, then why shouldn't you? I think it would be fun to try. You might have a fortune waiting for you! Good luck!

o.0 it kind a complicated... scary.. maybe you should seek more advise from other good layers who specialize in such field. you should make sure you won't go to jail for it because in the 1st place you or your mom didn't owed the money from Aunt's creditor... you didn't borrow money from them. it not fair if you guys might go to jail for conspiracy... so be very careful.. good luck

Gee Pye, Sorry about your missed fortune. No pun intended. lol Really, at least she should give you a little something for driving you crazy, don't you think. No, I have never had any exciting family mystery happen. My family has always been pretty straight forward about leaving things very carefully and neatly for those left behind. My mom changes her will every few years just to drive me crazy. She's 77 and I'm sure she will change it a few more times. She even makes me go around her house showing me hidding places when I go to visit her in Florida and then she changes the hidding places again. She also makes me go in her creepy closet and open the safe, over and over just to make sure I know how to do it. Yeah, I come from a long line of lunatics.

As you know from the previous episode of this we never did find my grandfathers treasures. We did dig very deep think it might have settled. But it could not have sunk that far. He did something with it but we have no idea what. So that rurned out to be a dud also.

Wow. Well first off, yes, by all means, go after Aunt Dorothy's money. My second thought is, how well do you trust Lisa? Are you 100% sure she is telling you the truth? Have you seen the storage unit to make sure she's telling the truth? As your mother's daughter, you have every right to enter the unit and you can always just tell them that your mother sent you over there. Since Lisa opened that unit before your mother's passing, enough time has gone by where she wouldn't need all the secrecy anymore, right? Let me know how it all turns out!
