Apartment greed or am I missing something in Southern California

I remember when I first decided to get an apartment vs a house. At the time I was single, no bills really.
A house would call for water bills, sewage bills, HOA regulations.
As an apartment wouldn't require that, I decided to go the apartment route.
That was over a decade ago.
Over the past 2 years, the apartment management has added some new fees and regulations.
1. Now pay for water usage
2. Now I pay for sewage usage
3. They banned the use of ALL BBQ's on the patio's (killed Father's Day and the 4th for us. Tradition broken)Those used to be my ultimate BBQ days at home.
4. Added recycling fees
5. The 24/7 hour mantainence that charges you extra if you call after hours, regardless of issue
What's next apartment entry fee? This is starting to tick me off. And to top it off, my rent is about as much as the house note for some people.
Since I have been there, my rent has doubled since it's original price.

The place I live now changed owners a few months ago. Now all we get is a bunch of empty promises and management telling us things that they shouldn't have told us. For example, when we renewed our lease, the lady in the office told us since we had been here for so long (10 years) that we had a grandfather clause so we wouldn't have to pay for water. Unfortunately she didn't put that in our new lease, and by the time we went to sign the lease management had changed and she was no longer working here. New management said because there was no note of that clause we were responsible for paying. We have learned that this new management is more about making money than pleasing their tenants. One lesson we learned: Get it in writing!

yeah, they're killing you while they are making a killing. i had a co-worker who was charged $100 more for snow removal but they didn't always remove the snow. and there usually wasn't snow to remove.
