Should Cars Have a "U-Turn" Signal?

We have a left turn signal and a right turn signal, but no u-turn signal. I think a u-turn signal could be very useful. It could just be a nice little "U" that lights up in the front center of the car and the rear center. Or the left blinker could blink in a "U" shape instead of blinking the full light so that people would know.
I think this would save a lot of confusion. When the person turning left in front of you takes forever and you wonder what on earth they are doing, you wouldn't have to wonder anymore. When people are turning left and you're thinking about making that right turn, you wouldn't have to guess that someone is making a u-turn (although, of course there would still be the people who refuse to use turn signals). Still, overall I think it could be useful.
So why don't cars have this? Am I the only person who thinks this could be a kind of useful feature?

I don't know about you but in my country, there is a lane for u-turn purposes only when needed and everyone who lines up on that lane is going to make u turns and all we need to do is to signal right and wait for a safe moment to make the u turn. Why else would I need 1 since I know everyone is going to make a u-turn at specific places?
Besides that, you would need to make your u turn signal very obvious if you are going to let people know about it if you are placing it in front of your car because your headlights might make it hard to see at night. If you did manage to get it to work, your car would look really odd with that thing in front of it. Can you imagine what your car would look like?
It might be handy in some cases but why add it when you already have something that works well enough already? It is not like a large portion of accident is due to people not being able to see cars making u turns and hitting them? The car is so big and obvious.

Now that is a smart idea, a U-turn lane.
Here what we have is either one or two left turn lanes. From the left turn lane, if you are on a single left turn lane you can choose to make either a left turn or a U-turn (but no one except you knows which one you'll choose). If it is a double left turn lane, you must be in the center most lane to make a U-turn, but you don't have to make a U-turn just because you got in that lane.
I was thinking the U-turn signal would be the same color as the other turn signals, so it wouldn't blend in with the headlights. It could even be a totally different color though, like blue or something. It probably would look pretty odd, but I think car designers could be up for a challenge and make it look nice. I guess if you already had only specified spots that you could do U-turns, you wouldn't need it. Here people do them in the middle of the road as well and other odd places where you might not expect it. And when you're making a right turn and someone else is making a U-turn, that's a cause for a lot of accidents out here.

That would be very useful!
Although I think they don't because in a lot of states u-turns are illegal.
Great idea!

Really? I never knew that u-turns were illegal in any states. I know there are a lot of places where you can't do them at specific intersections and some cities don't hardly allow them anywhere, but wow... I guess I learn something new everyday.

Great thought indeed!

You should definitely forward your thought and idea to car manufacturing companies. I totally agree with you if we can get 'U' turn singal lights on our cars, it would be of great help to us and to other people, who are following us on a road. I myself have been caught in this web, specially while taking right run, some of the vehicles suddently take a 'U' turn, causing irritation and damage to our vehicle.

Dear, whenever I am requried to take 'U' turn, after your post, my mind simply travels to your interesting post and I think, Alas! somebody should 'see' the great idea
of dear friend and implement it sooner than later.

It could be useful especially if there is just 1 road which goes both ways. It would alert both incoming traffic that it might take a while for the u-turn especially if the road is narrow. For now though, the simple left or right turn still works fine. Although the real problem is that some people do not use them. Some people make mistakes a few time when they want to go left but they turn on the right turn signal.
On big intersections, or 2 separate roads for both ways of traffic, the left/right turn signals would do fine for now. For me though, I still think that if the left turn signal is on, it's either he will go left or take a U-turn to the left. I give the car extra space.

That's an excellent point as well. A lot of the beach cities out here have narrow roads. But usually if someone puts their turn signal on it still takes the same amount of time for them to turn left as it does to make the U-turn, so either way people try to get out of their way.
I think a lot of people don't use their turn signals. I tend to just watch people's heads to see if they're thinking about turning or changing lanes. But so far I haven't found a head motion that goes along with "I am going to make a U-turn."

Yeah, that's right! You're very observant and have a wide area of awareness. Yes, it's definitely a clue if you can see the driver from behind and he/she shows intention of turning. It's just sad that some people do neglect the use of the signal. It happened a lot of times when I got cut off. The least we could do is be careful and give way to avoid accidents. Take care my friend. Stay safe.

Yes a 'u' turn feature would be very useful! It would like you say make it easier to know when that car in friont is taking ages and stop us from hgetting annoyed about waiting wondering why they havn't just turned! x
