what do you consider constituting as an idol?

to me anything you would worship but some people would also see this as symbols too.. so to me that would include any statues of the virgin mary, crucifixes, jesus, etc but yet those are accepted and deemed ok.. not to mention the companies that produce these products that make money off of preying on peoples religions and you know that most of them arent with religions.. what are your thoughts on this? i am not meaning any disrespect to any one i just dont understand the difference so please enlighten me
