I found myself trying to make too much of out of an official communication that I received this morning. Maybe it was not drafted/worded well enough.
Do you interpret that what you read, hear about or said to you at "face value" or are you trying to "read between the lines" ? And if you are trying to read in between the lines, are you doing it just about for everything or things which are more personal.

Alok
firstly sorry for missing this discussion.
Now, coming to the discussion, I think, I most definitely go by face value when it concerns my personal relationships. Here by face value I mean the kind of rapport I share with family, friends, loved ones. Many times they just blast me, fight with me, reason with me for reasons they find worth. Even I give a good repartite but I hardly go by the lines they shower me with during those fiery moments. I know they love me and never try to interpret the meanings of what they say.
On the other hand when in comes to professional field I think I would read between the lines and try to get the exact meaning conveyed there. For I believe, office decorum doesn't allow us to any or write off anyone anytime, whatever the situation it may be.
Did that make sense??
I think I messed up with your nice thoughts.

Mimpi, You have not missed it, and oh yes you have made a lot of sense. You go on the face value of what your loved ones convey and in the professional field you will search for further meaning.
The purpose of the discussion is to ascertain when and where we do that and to what extent. There are some who will go to the extent of reaching a point of hallucination while reading between the lines.
You have added quality and substance to my thoughts.

Thanks alok.
You have always elevated my confidence. And yes I know what you mean - the hallucination thing could be scary and go to the extent of a disease!

I normally do not read between the lines as far as any official communication is concerned. I feel, if I am unable to comprehend any letter's correct meaning, it is none of my fault, may be it was not worded or drafted properly. Some people do not bother to go through again, before sending an official communication, this leads to silly mistakes sometimes. Once my colleague told me that a typist had to type 'Chief of Materials', he typed 'Thief of Material'....LOL!
