Hit counter on Blog not working properly...

I'm after a bit of advice from anyone who knows about blogs and hit counters. I got a free hit counter from Bravenet and there is an option on there to ignore my own hits when I look at my blog. This works well on my husband's computer where I set up the hit counter, but whenever I look at it on my computer it counts my hits too!
My traffic is non-existant really, but I'd like to know if I ever get any genuine readers. While it's recording the hits I make on my computer it's all a bit confusing. (I can just about work it out while the numbers are so low, but I feel with a hit counter installed I shouldn't have to work it out myself!)
Does anyone else find this?
Can you only get it to ignore your own hits on one computer?
How do I get it to ignore my hits on all computers?
Am I doing something wrong?
Am I overestimating what it can do? lol?!
Grateful if anyone can help, as I'm confused!

It is possible to ignore your own hits. I don't know about Bravenet, but I use both sitemeter and statcounter. They're both free and you can configure it to ignore your visits.

Thanks for your answer.
I have configured it to ignore my hits, and it works if I use my husband's computer (the one where I originally set up the hit counter), but when I look at my blog on my computer it counts them.
I don't know how I can make it ignore those ones as well. Maybe I need to configure it again on that computer?
