I was asked this question when I spent a couple of years in America by quite a few people. Does anyone out there know themselves what the difference is?

The United Kingdom is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is England, Wales and Scotland. If you look at a map you will see that the capital of England is London, the capital of Wales is Cardiff, the capital of Scotland is Edinburgh and the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. Southern Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom or Great Britain. The capital city of Southern Ireland is Dublin. The currency in the United Kingdom is the pound and the currency in Southern Ireland is the euro. A British person would be English, Welsh or Scottish. An Irish person would only be part of the United Kingdom if they came from Northern Ireland.

hi - I used to live in Weston-Super-Mare (well in near by village of Uphil), wen't back last week - hasn't changed that much really, some new shops in the shopping centre and I don't know if you've heard that the main part of the Grand Pier recently burnt down?

Hi jend80 I actually went to WSM yesterday on my way back from Preston on a visit and I did hear that the pier had burnt down but I didn't want to go past it to see because I want to keep the image of how it was in my head. I also went to get some shoes that I bought there when I lived there but the shop has now shut down, I was gutted!

England is a country within Great Britain, as is Scotland & Wales & Nothern Ireland. The difference is Great Britain is the name for the entire island, England isn't.

The others have very eloquently answered you question so I shall just say "hello" and let you know that I am English and British in that order! I live here too. In Wiltshire.

The trouble with the weekend is that it is often quiet. Many Americans will be away or manning their barbecues about now. But sleep on it and you never know. There may be a torrent of interest in the morning. I hope so for you.

Well it has to be said that your are of course, right p1kef1sh. The Americans sure do enjoy a good barbeque as would the Brits if only we always had the weather for it!!

Hello to you too p1kef1sh As this is an American site I was kinda hoping to some American input here proving to me that they know more about the UK, Great Britain and England than they did 15 odd years ago when I lived there but I am not having much luck am I? Cheers for popping in and saying hello though
