Holidays from work

The place where my hubby works broke up yesterday for three weeks holidays, so it means that we get this time all together as a family. For me it is when I technically class my summer as starting, when we are all at home together. The way the company does their holidays is different than how a lot of other places do theirs, rather than the workforce choosing their holidays as they please and when they want the whole place has set holidays, and the holidays are set to fall in with the kids holidays off school. So my hubbys holidays from work are a bit like this, a week off with the kids in May, three weeks off in July when the kids are off school, a week in September which is not at the same time as the kids, then a week to ten days off at christmas. In theory these are fantastic holidays as it means we are all off together and have family time, but in reality it can be a bit of a pain as it means that we can only go on holiday in the school holidays and this can cost a fortune! But it is lovely that they have so many holidays for me and the kids, well all of us really. What are yours or your S/O holiday allowance at work? How do you take your holiday allowances? How much time off from work do you get at christmas?

Your husband is really lucky. Mine only gets 2 weeks a year, and he gets 1 day off on major holidays. Like at Christmas he gets that day off, and that's it. He has to work the day before and the day after. It just bites!!

I actually thought about you when I was doing this discussion and was hoping that you would not feel upset by it as I know you and hubby are not having a good time of things work wise. I nearly put a note on it too you! So he gets crap hols as well, it is really bad that you are not getting quality time together as a family Xx

That's life as a GM in a retail store, ugh! Well, as I said, I'm feeling a bit better today, I've been so stressed lately it was nice to have this weekend to unwind. He actually is taking a vacation the last week of August, so just a few more weeks to hold out. After his vacation the children will return to school, yay!

We get 10 holiday days off this year. Eight are standard and two are floating. This year one of the floating days is December 26, so we get two days off at Christmas this go-round. However, we have 20 personal days we can take off, either for vacation or sick days or just personal time. Most people don't take more than a week off at a time, depending on the workload.

It's not bad at all. With my wife's fibromyalgia and frequent migraines, it's pretty handy to have some flexible time off.

My hubby only gets 10 days annual leave as well as the normal public holidays. Because he travels a lot, he has to apply for leave in advance if he wants to take a week off here and there. He does get a lot of comp time (travel and acrued hours for working overtime when they are overseas) and he uses that to take the odd day off here and there. He's lucky to get a week off at once but that really depends on his travelling schedule.

That does not sound like a lot of time off.

I don't work at present. I worked for my previous employer for 31 years and when I left I was entitled to 6 weeks holiday a year to be taken when I liked. In theory! I always took two weeks at Christmas though. My FIL used to get the "Industrial Fortnight" every year from his firm in Birmingham. That was always in the school holidays and, like you, meant that he was off when the children were too. My wife gets 5 weeks and can take hers when she wants too. But both she and I often used to not take all our holiday entitlement. I could carry a few days over into the following year. I don['t know whether she can. I'll have to ask her.

6 weeks that is some good holidays, I like that hubby is off when the kids are as it means we get that time together it is just annoying that it is so expensive to go away then. Mind you saying that, they are stopping parents taking their kids out of school now in term time and in some places imposing £50 fines through the school for those that take them out. It would cost me £100 at the minute to take mine out in term time!!!

As a former school governor I have some sympathy with schools' policy in that respect. Conversely, it is a lot cheaper to holiday out of school holidays. Would you save the fine by holidaying in term time. It's the child that suffers though in the long run.

mals vacation time is pretty much up to him. theres no company shut-down or anything. he works for a company that trades stocks, so anytime the market is down.. so are they and he has the day off with pay, in addition to his 4 weeks paid that he can take in whatever way he wishes to take it off. we get alot of three or four day weekends and spread it out over the year. and he takes a week here and there as well. he just started a 10 day sprint this last friday and is off until the 11th.. at this same time, the sprite is starting daycamp.. so we are going to get the first bit of ALONE time together in over 5 years now.

I cant answer that one ,but ican tell you how it used to go..hubby used to have to take his holidays much the same as yours, the shut down meant that he had to take his time off ,there was no choice in it,We always used to try to take the children away for a week or two and it didnt matter if the second weeek was just a visit to family. But the holidays have changed a little since then!!and my three year old grandson was telling me about his journey to Spain in the plane,he thought it was fab!!But we used to holiday here in the UK,and we never ever thought of going abroad!!!that was a foreign country!!!!but we used to go to the New forest a lot,to Brockenhurst,a lovely place, the camp that we used to go to was called Bashley park,New milton,it was a little bit dearer, but the facilities were brilliant.and there was always plenty for the children to do,the place was wonderfully clean and the people who ran it were very pleasant,so yes we always looke dforward to that stay!

This a great providence for you and the family-the hussles of work has a very serious bearing on familyhood-work just keeps us off from the quality time with our family-now am happy for you because am sure you will all be around your kids!
