Esperanto was an attempt to build and spread a language by the use of logic. Its structure is more logical and easier to learn then a normal language. As with most appeals to logic, this hasn't made a big impact on the human race overall. If the Council of Scientists met at World Government Headquarters and decided Esperanto would be the world language, and everyone believed in and supported such central decisions, Esperanto would be the common language. What will much more likely happen is what has already been happening; English was a prevalent language due to how world history turned out for the past 100 years and more. The Internet was dominated from the start by English speakers, and by business users who already used English internationally. The use of English has become so widespread, the growth of the Internet will only accelerate it. The growth is too advanced, and deeply imbedded, and accelerating to be changed by any concious effort. This isn't a claim for the superiority of English as a language...it's quite messy, inconsistent, and difficult...but it's just there, like an 800 pound gorilla. OK, it's good for this lazy monoglot American.

A man came up with this language in the late 1800's, so it has been around for a long time. I don't think people take it very seriously, and people just prefer to learn English. If it is to ever pick up and become popular, it will take many years for it to get to that point. Slowly it is getting recognized though, but not fast enough to have much of an impact of educational systems though.
