help in writting sympathy message

My brother-in-laws father passed away recently and I've bought a card to send him tomorrow but I am having a mental block as what to write in the card. When it comes to this type of thing I never know what to say .The card does have a lovely verse but I would like to add something personal from me .Does anyone have any ideas .
