Do you cut medicine tablets/caplets?

I was prescribed to take 10 mg of methimazole for my hyperthyroidism but there are only two available dosages in the drug store, 5 mg and 20. So my choice is either to take 5 5-mg tablet or cut the 20 mg-tablet into two. The 20 mg is cheaper so I prefer it and I only have to take half tablet of two 5-mg. I hate taking medicine so I prefer which one will require lesser number of intake. I am just wondering if it is advisable and how many of you here are doing it. Thanks for your replies.

Hi chrysz, I am like you..Can be a quack doctor of myself too! LOL! I am sure it's not good but as long as we are getting healed, that is fine for me.. I remember before I was advised to take 20 of a certain medicine but I only got 10 and I was fine, have no side effects!LOL! But, when it is something serious, guess we need to follow it!

As long as the medicine is not time release, you can split the pills. There are pill cutters that you can buy (they are about $1) that easily cut pills in half. We use one when giving our cat Benedryl.
