How Can We Best Benefit From The Past?

The past is an interesting place--and, personally, I'm a nostalgia buff and very sentimental.
I think that being able to remember the past helps us in a lot of ways, because we can not only remember what's good about it and want to have it remain a part of our present and future--or, if not a part of it now, to realize that it should have never left us and be willing to do whatever it takes to bring it back (either in the same way or in a new-and-improved version)--but we can also remember what was bad about it (e.g. The Holocaust, racial discrimination) and become aware of signs that history might repeat itself so that we can stop something like this in its tracks.
Early this morning, I received an e-mail from Russell that I'd like to share with you. With the exception of correcting a typo, adding the boldface for emphasis, and enclosing it in a bordered area this is exactly what he wrote...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wanted to share this with you, I do not know how this got into my head, I certainly did not put it there:
It is 3:13 AM my time, I am sitting here playing catch-up on my e-mail and enjoying the peace and quiet, without the roar of San Diego in the background.
It is a new day, new opportunities and new decisions to make. The past is history it cannot be undone, tomorrow is the future it has not been decided yet. What have we learned from the past that we can use today in making the right decisions? Pretty deep huh, but nevertheless that is the way it is.
I will probably go back to bed between 5 - 6 AM for a couple of hours, in the meantime I am enjoying the opportunity to hear myself to think, without the roar of San Diego in the background, Sort of like communicating with myself without interruptions.
Like later!
In case you haven't heard of Russell T. Hartsaw before (though, if you've read very many of my writings, I can't imagine that! LOL), I would like to share something else he has written...
Reading his words--and responding accordingly--will help to make both the present and the future more pleasant and promising for countless children, teens, and young adults as well as helping to make up for the hand that they were dealt in the past.
Hi AJ1952Chats! I do agree with you about learning from the past. We should not carry our past as burdens but as reminders and lessons for us to improve our life, ourselves and pave way to a better tomorrow. The pain, the mistakes of our past should not be carried in our hearts to make us bitter but as lessons to make us stronger and wiser.
Take care and God bless us and the future generation!
And we should also carry with us the very best memories of the past so that we can keep them going for future generations.
My past was a very happy one, and I love sharing it with others.
When I see today's kids enjoying the activities that I enjoyed as a child, I feel very good--and, when I see the things that have improved for the children of today, I also feel very good.
I love this now-popular song that reminds me of those days when I was 2 1/2 years old, and my grandpa put me on his lap and let me "drive" his John Deere tractor--followed by those days when my dad put me on his lap and let me drive the car around the parking lot of Plant 11 where my mom worked while we were waiting for her to come out and share her dinner break with us.
Hi AJ1952Chats! Yes, I do agree with you that we should also carry with us the beautiful memories that have never failed to put a smile in my heart as I continue my journey in life. Sad to say that I was not able to watch and listen to the youtube link you have shared with me. It kept on saying, "This video is not available in your country". I don't know why. Anyway thanks for sharing a beautiful memory of the past with me somehow.
Take care and God Bless!
I think we can benefit from the pat. There are valuable lessons there. Looking back can sometimes keep us on the right path. It can keep us from repeating mistakes of others. That is, if we take the time to look.
ITA--and it not only shows us what mistakes not to make again but, also, what we did right back then so that we can either keep on doing it or else, if we've quit doing it at sometime, to start doing it again.
