Can you believe this is GUM?

One of the pillars of GUM - that I took in Italy at the docks. While waiting for the ferry toward Venice, I saw this interesting pillar that is so colorful.

I was traveling with my wife on our honey moon when we came across this really interesting sight. We were waiting for our ferry to Venice at the docks when I noticed this really colorful pillar. Thinking it was mosaic at the distance, I went down the pier for a closer look. Only to realize that they are actually chewed gum that was disposed of by people! Man... it was disgusting, but at the same time, very interesting. In fact, all the available pillars there were dotted with chewed gum! Got lots more pictures of Italy for you to view. Check out my other thread... http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1606974.aspx

That simply shows how artistic people can be and their way of helping Mother Earth by not throwing gums everywhere. It's quite disgusting though... Happy posting!

ha ha ha ha... that is one way of looking at it. It is amazing what people would do for convenience when disposing of their gum. It is just plain nasty. Imagine, if you were to walk along that pier. And you lost your footing. And you reach out for support. And guess where your hands land. Ewww~~~~

Hi ahgong, well it might not the prettiest sight but I guess it is better than having it on the floor and then getting stuck to the bottom of our shoes. LOL

Well, when you put it that way. Yes, it is a lesser of the two evils. But like I posted before, if you lose your footing... stretching out for support is not going to be pleasant!

eewww! thats so gross! i would have thought that the city would make sure that the pillars where kept scraped free of gum, especially since Venice is such a draw for vacationers! i wonder why they dont want it clean though?

This pillar was not found in Venice. It was found at the docks or the ferry going to Venice. I too agree with you that it is disgusting. But at the same time, it is interesting. The collection of colors and shapes of each gum left behind by the many travelers who took the ferry from this dock. Heh heh heh...

It looked really nice... and i didn't think it was dotted with gum... i thought they were some kind of clay... but now at least they found a practical use for chewed gum... rather than just spit them out on the street... put them on the pillars... and try to create something that can be a form of art... The human mind knows no boundaries... when it comes to art...

Like I mentioned earlier, it is both disgusting and interesting at the same time! The best part of it is, people actually stand and admire these graffiti art. Given the law where I am, and the knack for cleanliness, some one would have engaged a cleaner to scrape all of these off a long long time ago. You will never get to see a collection of gum like that ever!

eww nast but cool my question is was that intended to be where people where or could throw the gum away on or did someone just do it and every one else just followed lol??

I really do not know for sure. Cos it seems that the collection of gum extends to almost all the pillars along all the different piers on the docks! As high as the tallest man I know could reach, the gum is all there. Even on the side where it is facing the sea! I guess some one started it. And then everyone just follow suit. And there is where the collection begins. I wonder, how old is the oldest piece of gum that is stuck there. Heh heh heh...

Wow that is crazy!!! Wouldn't it be cool if you could find out where the people live that each piece of gum belongs to? I think it would be neat to see the wide variety of people that have left their mark on this. Although at the same time it's kind of disgusting, you have to wonder how many diseases might be floating on that pole at one time. :o) Very neat picture and story though, thank you for sharing!
