Should pets be allowed at work?

I don't get it. A co-worker of mine brought her pet chihuaha to work with her today and no one said anything! She asked me to 'babysit' it for her since I work in the office and I told her NO. She's keeping the poor thing in the bathroom. Customers use this bathroom too! What in the hell? Do you think it's okay to bring a pet with you to work?

No, it's absolutely not ok to bring your pet to work. There are all kinds of laws to prevent things like this. Good for you for telling her that you would not watch her dog, as it would be you who would get in trouble for it, not her. Surely she must know that she's not allowed to bring it to work, or she wouldn't be locking it in the bathroom. I would report her and the dog as it's disrupting to you and your work.

It seems to be unanimous. No dogs at work! Thanks for your comment.

There is a place for everything and the place for a pet is not at work!a pet should be at home,it is far too much of a distraction, the only time that a pet should be allwed through the doors of a workplace is if they have a blind employee, and the dog is a guide dog trained by the RNIB.

I think it put a lot of stress on the animal too. He was shaking all day.

Absolutely not. I am a pet fan but if you can't leave them at home you better afford a doggy daycare. It is inappropriate and unprofessional. There is no reason that a dog should be brought to work for any reason. I do not bring my child to work and if I do not have daycare then I don't work.

No its not ok, if the work place isnt insured for it either then they could really find themselves in trouble. They dont allow children in the work place so why allow animals they still take a persons mind off their work.

You're absolutely right! She was preoccupied with it all day. Walking around with it even!

I do not think an employee should be allowed to bring their pet to work with them. What was her purpose for bringing the dog? I onced worked for a hospice, and we had dogs in there all of the time, but they were working, they were licensed therapy dogs. The manager of your company needs to say something to her.

The thing for Hospice is a great idea. I've never heard of that. I bet they really bring a smile to the patient's day.

Certainly not! Many people have allergies or are afraid of particular animals. I'm sure it would contravene health and safety laws and organisations like the RSPCA would probably take a dim view of what your colleague is doing. If you take on the responsibility of having a pet, you make suitable arrangements for its care. If I was a customer who found a pet in the bathroom I'd be complaining to the management!

Next time maybe I'll call and report it. Of course I'd do it anonymously. But I'm really hoping there's not a next time.

Absolutely not. Pets should not be allowed at work. It's completely inappropriate. And she should be held accountable for it. What if someone in the office or a customer has allergies? And it's certainly not anybody else's responsibility to look after the poor thing. Why does she have a dog if she can't adequately care for it when she's not around? I don't understand this current trend of using chihuahuas as accessories. People are carrying them around in purses, for Pete's sake.

Carrying them in purses....that is so utterly ridiculous. I see Paris Hilton doing that EVERYWHERE she goes. Poor pups.

Your employer is putting himself at risk of a lawsuit if that dog causes injury to someone by biting or causing a slip and fall incident. No, the dog does not belong in the office and I would never allow it in a business I ran.
