Do you get irritated when people from cal centers call U?

I work as an Account Manager in a promotional products company selling items you can put your logo on to business people in the US. I am also an Agent of another call center in Australia doing surveys for Australian Residents. I get bad responses to people from different walks of life by talking to them on the phone. They are irritated, mad, some even swears at us and lots more..But WHY? We are just doing our jobs..trying to earn a hard earned decent job to feed our family.. I am working 17 hours a day to raise my 5 kids and raise a family. Let me give you scenarios about this. 1. A person signs up on our website and we call them to check if we can help them in their search for promotional products. Client gets irritated with the call and says how did you get our number? Don't call me and I am not interested...We understand totally but did you know that there are websites that when you sign up the agent gets charge for $43 because you sign up and you went to them and this is what we get? Why sign up on something you are not even interested in? 2. Agent calls and client say what the ^%%( are you talking about? Why can't people just say; Hey you know what I'm sorry I registered on your website but I have no need for this items at the moment but I really do appreciate the call. Or they can say ..I'm sorry but I cannot take the call and I am too busy but I appreciate the call... Why can't people just reject us sales people in a nice way? Why do they have to get mad at things which we didn't do anything to them at all? It is just part of our job. Are you in a call center? do you get this kind of people? Do you feel bad when people push you away rudely? I do...I think some people just don't have any manners at all that they do this to people who are just trying to earn for their family..It's sad.

I have mostly 3,000 leads to call on the promotional products company I am in.. I don't like calling over and over. If I called them today for instance and it's either voice mail, they don't have any need, or the person is out..I don't call them again I schedule them after 3 months. I don't like annoying people with calls. Thanks for responding.

When i get unsolicited sales calls I just tell the caller that I'm registered on the 'Telephone Preference Service' list so they should not be calling. Usually they understand and terminate the call. If they don't, I tell them I am going to put the phone down & then do. I would be unlikely to say that i appreciate them calling because, frankly, I don't. I am more irritated by salespeople and canvassers who come to the door and will not accept a 'No thank you, I'm not interested'.

I understand that people sometimes irritates us when you say No I am not interested or I am busy, I am on a dnc list...then they start to do a rebuttal and say oh I understand that but this will be helpful to you..or this will just take a few minutes of your time..They do this because their boss tells them to do it. I don't like bugging people but all our calls are recorded and we have to bug because we are pushed to do it but most of the times we really don't mean to do it. Even if our heart desires to understand you sometimes we have to do it just to keep our jobs. I hope you understand. I am not sure about the door salesman because I don't know how they work. If it's on a DNC list we don't really call them.

Yes, I understand that, as in any position, you have to do what your boss says or risk losing your job - and i know that telesales staff are often humiliated and treated disgracefully by their management. I have sympathy with them and with those who man customer service phone lines but you asked if we found it irritating - so I gave you an honest answer -(but I wouldn't actually be rude to you...). I hope you find plenty of people who are more responsive to sales calls than me

i worked as a call service representative for a cellphone company in the US, very new. we get inbound calls. i agree, most of these people do not have manners after signing up and getting into the program. after being briefed on what to do after registering, then if something wrong happens to their account they get mad why things happen! i know they just want to vent out their frustratiions but most of them are going way beyond bounds of ethics.

I always get irritated when people from call center are trying to reach me, especially when they are trying to sell the product I am not interested in. The most of all I hate to waste my time on such calls, because it is rude to simply hang up and you still need to listen what they are offering. I feel sorry for people who work in call centers though. I think it is a very difficult job, because some people are acting really rude and you need to have a nerve to not take it too close to your heart.

It is really a very difficult job that we have to face each day just to be rudely spoken to. Not a day goes by that I dont get a rude person or someone who will bang the phone so loud it hurts my ear sometimes they even do this irritating scratching sound on the phone to irritate us which I think is so childish to do. Thanks for responding...

I work in a call center.. but people call us if they need to dig. You would be surprised at how many people get aggravated and irritated, because they have called for a FREE LIFE and MONEY saving service to have their utility lines marked before they dig so they don't electrocute or blow themselves into smithereens. I realize we ask a lot of questions, but that is because we transmit the info the utility companies and they then send out their own people to mark their own lines. A lot of these people are contractors that call on a daily basis and still get p!ssy eve though we as the same questions EVERY time they call. They don't have the info ready and get snotty with us. . We are also required to ask everyone if they have heard of our program to submit the info on-line instead of calling. Just today.. some @ssh0le calls and when I ask him that yes or no question, he says "I don't have time for this sh!t.. just get someone on the line who can help me" SO I was a total B!tch in return. I go through all of the questions (most of which he didn't have the answers for) then he gives me the address. I read it back, he sighs and says "YES THAT'S CORRECT" I gave him his reference nmber (which is the whole reason he called) and he's snaps "what's this?" I explained what it was for (even though he has called before) and he says.. "Let me double check on the address" So HE puts ME on hold (remember, he didn't have time for all of this) to double check the address. Turns out, he gave me the wrong address.. so I had to cancel his first ticket ..to which he says "unf*$%ingbeleivable" gives me attitude when I ask for the correct information, give me attitude when I read it back and ask him if it was correct, then sputters out more profanities before saying "thank you" and hangs up the phone I already had a headache... he just made it worse.. needless to say.. my day was downhill from there. When I call somewhere for help, I answer their direct questions with direct answers, I will be polite, and give them what they ask for.. nothing more.. nothing less. If I sign up for something, I will be polite even if I am not sure at first why they are calling me, and politely decline if I am no longer interested or signed up accidentally, or didn't fully understand what I did. We all have to make a living somehow, and people should get over themselves and respect the person on the other line. I am sorry my response turned into a rant about my day.. but as a fellow CSR.. I know you FULLY understand

Yes I fully understand some people just think so low of us sometimes that they think they can address us rudely. It is unfair on our part when at times we are just trying to help them out and they do this kind of thing. Thanks for responding. It is well appreciated.

I have the home phone registered on a list so people know not to call, and if they do I politely remind them they are breaking the law. They usually hang up after that. However it people that call my mobile which annoy me. They shouldn't have my number as I only give it out to friends. I have a feeling the provider sells the info on. Usually the calls are from a third party about upgrading my phone, which I am not interested in as I have a pay as you go phone. Once, when I was on contract, got three calls a day for a week from the same company. It only stopped when I threatened them and my provider with legal action after they gave my details away after I stated on the contract that they were not to do that.

I really don't know how a number on a do not call list end up on the leads data base in a call center. I guess maybe it's sold underground by the phone company to the call center...although I am not so sure about that. It is really a bother when you have your phone on a do not call and people still calls you. Usually on our part here on the American Call Center I am in we only get the numbers when our clients register on our website and we call just the business industry and when we speak to them and they gave out their cellphone it is their choice. I resigned already on the Australian call center I am also in due to the part that almost everyone I call in Australia were so rude and bad mouthing me to much that I can't handle it even though I needed the extra pay. Also my Australian boss was kinda rude too. I decided to stay on the US call center I am in. The people I speak to are much nicer and same with the people I work with. Thanks for responding by the way. I appreciate it.

I understand that they are just doing there job, but many workers do not accept no for an answer and this is what annoys people. It also annoys people when they ring at annoying times, such as during meal times and late at night. I few nights ago I got a call at 11pm, wtf? Fair enough if they sign up to a website and you call them, but many companies get your number through other companies or phone books etc and then contact you several times after you have said that you are not interested.

Oh that is quite disappointing when you get a call in the middle of the night. Just to make our readers aware..Call centers are located in different parts of the world and sometimes when you get a call in the US you are thinking you are talking to Americans but mainly you are sometimes talking to a Filipino working in the Philippines who just have a very good American voice. Now we have time differences which I know everyone knows..When it is night here it is morning in the US. I work here 10pm-7am for my US company and there are times we are not aware what time is it already in most of the states. I often mess up when I call Hawaii. When its 10pm here it's still dawn there and I always fold up when I mistakenly call them at that time but the thing is I didn't know the number is for Hawaii. So it is really a bummer to get a call like that but most of the time we don't mean it because we didn't know what part of the country that number is for. Thanks for responding..I appreciate it.

Well, I have accepted that it is how a lot of companies do business. And it has opened a lot of employment opportunities for my fellow countrymen, so I'm not totally against call centers. If I do get a call, which I seldom do, I politely listen to the other end and politely decline the offer. From their point of view, it must really be hard to always receive negative feedback from potential customers. Anyway, I just tolerate them and try to be polite, but not exactly nice.

I get very irritated when I get irrelevant calls from the call center. I dont understand why they disturd other people's privacy to such an great extent. Sometimes they try to be too formal which is again breath taking. I think this culture should be reduced. But I totally respect the people working over there. I never use abusive language on the people.
• Philippines

People will lose jobs if they reduce this kind of business. It gives jobless people jobs to feed and raise their family. I know and understand that it is irritating at times but we have to understand that we are not doing this calls for ourselves but to get paid by the people who told us to do so. I totally respect your point of view. Thanks for responding.

I am not in this line but do appreciate this work. even some salepersons have admired my politeness with them. I just talk to them refusing their offers but they say that no other person talks so nicely to us. I know telemarketers or door to door salesmen are considered irritating, time consuming and as robbers but they are just doing their job. If you donot want smthing you can always refuse it. Butttttttttt some salespersons give misleading info reg their products and cause loss to people and due to them only whole profession is getting bad name.
• Philippines

Yeah I understand...There are real scammers who just wants to get money out of people and that really dos give others doing their jobs a bad name. I just wish they will stop with it because innocent people just trying to get food for their family are being treated rudely over the phone and it is quite disappointing. I am glad to know you are nice to telemarketers. I salute you.. Thanks for responding.

Oh I am sorry to hear that. Most of our calls are recorded and people who call back clients and talk to them rudely after being hanged up or was told off in a bad way often lose their jobs. We are not allowed to do that and we all know it's not nice. I just swallow it when people talk to me rudely on the phone. Let me give you one incident I had on one of the call centers I used to work in a UK call center offering them phone lines over the phone. I called residents and when I called this guy he shouted at me and called me blasphemous names and keep saying the F word. I was fuming mad. I was sad at the same time that this guy doesn't even know yet what Iam calling about and he started to say this thing to me. I counted to 10 and dialed the same number (take note our calls are recorded) During that time I don't care anymore if our calls were recorded or not, I called this guy back and told him he is a disgrace to his country to even act that way. Told him he should learn some ethics and good morals. Yeah I know it was bad to call him back but that was the first call someone did that to me and it almost made me cry. I don't deserve to be spoken off that way. Thanks for responding. I appreciate it.

I have been working in a call center for more than a year already and good thing that I have also been trying to avoid outbound call center posts. Well, its just that it's not really my forte. I can still sell, but not really a seller. Being a call center agent myself, I have a sympathy for those outbound seller wherein they try to call potential people for certain products. It's more appreciable if the person who receives one of their calls will tell that agent that they really do not need that product, blah, instead of shouting and cursing and picking on these people. I understand that it is really sometimes irritating to receive several calls from people who are trying to sell you something, but just try to put yourself on these people's shoes, just like what WE try to do when we are already pissed off with customers who think they are also paying for our DIGNITY.

Yeah one of the call centers I am in is an outbound and we call Australian residents and they are really very rude. Even my Australian boss is rude. I think I will quit that one. I am not enjoying being rudely talked to by the people I call and by my boss. Thanks for responding.

im glad that this discussion have come up here since i had read various discussions on this which has negative effects ..some complaints about telemarketing which is obvious that they did not register for anything...when it pertains to call center agent calling and making surveys and everything that i cant comment much since i havent experienced that one..although i had registered some sites for surveys and yet havent received any call yet..how ever did in some way the agent explain to the client about the previous registration and the like? before introducing a new product or starting surveys? coz if they do maybe the atmosphere would be different..at some aspects some people really acts that way..so sad i guess..but since its a job then must have patience ..of course if im in your shoes i will be also be hurt..but if i think i did my best then and yet same rude response that i get...what can i do? maybe shrugged my shoulders and move on to another...
• Philippines
29 Jul 08
Yeah people sometimes should be careful in registering on sites. Like on one of my company when you register you become a lead for us to call. Sometimes people even say I never registered for anything ....but it's right in front of us that they just registered because we won't know they did if they didn't..People should all be patient and understanding. Yeah when people are rude I just count to 10 and let it slip..Hoping they won't get karma for being rude. Thanks for responding.

I am nice to people when they call and say no thanks, I usually like to make them laugh somehow because I know that the person on the other end deals with a lot of rejection from others. What annoys me is the endless automated calls I get. That drives me nuts. I just got a land line phone because I have AT$T internet so I have to have the phone. Anyway, not many people have the number bcs I just use my cell phone so I do not expect many calls on the land line but I may get some so I need to answer it. Anyway, 98% of the time that phone rings it is a stupid automated call. I need to find out how to get on that do not call list. Do you know how to do that? Hey, sorry for all the mean people out there.

I answered a post similiar to this one earlier today. I know that call centers provide many jobs all over the world, as well as serve as a viable market for companies all over the world, so that part is good. The part that I don't like is when they call me. I don't like this because I normally contact the companies that I want to do business with. I have signed up for the DNC but I still get sometimes 10 calls per evening, not to mention the ones that I get all day for companies marketing something at my business. I'm not a rude person so I love caller id. If I don't recognize the number or its a business name I don't answer, which is just as annoying because they just recycle the number like every 15 minutes or something. They have also come up with clever ways to disguise the name and id so that you at least pick up the phone...lol..and they at least have a shot at the sale. Occassionally when I just can't take the ringing anymore I will answer and politely tell the person that I am not interested and to please remove my name from the call list. Well they say that they will but it takes 6-8 weeks. Now thats a joke. Most of the ones if they ever get you on the phone and not satisfied with a polite "I'm not interested', they continue the sales pitch to the point that you have to either get rude or be rude to the point of hanging up on them. The other problem that I have is that granted these jobs are all over the world, but sometimes the accent or dialect in so strong that I have no idea what most of them are saying and it seems that their level of understanding of the english language is limited to 2 words..yes and no.
• Philippines
29 Jul 08
I see your point. Our leads are mostly washed..meaning it doesn't include DNC numbers. For us call centers getting leads we have the dnc numbers taken out. Mostly if this calls happens to you, you have to check with the people who puts your number on the DNC list sometimes the numbers gets deleted there and you have to update them from time to time that you still want to be on the DNC list so no one can ever bug you. When you say to take your name off the list... I would rather have that than be spoken rudely upon. I work in an American company and an Australian Company. I'm half Filipino-Half Spanish but I grew up speaking the english language and I am very fluent at it. Australians don't understand me though..they say are you american? lol..I hope you give time to read some of my responses to the discussions above yours so you can further understand us. Thanks for responding..

Hey there, no offense but I really hate people from call centers calling me or sending me text messages as I always think of them as spam. The reason behind this may be the result of people expecting every call or SMS to be important or that they are from their loved ones or people they know. Having a call from call centers is the way down on people's priority list. So I think you can understand them and I think it comes with the job.
• Philippines
30 Jul 08
Well not all of the callers are spam. I haven't heard of the text messaging thing we don't do that here though. Most people who don't want unsolicited calls or sales calls put their numbers on the DNC list. In our work we cannot choose the number because it was given to us by batches. I appreciate the response. Thanks
