Going back to Iraq

July 29, 2008 2:01am CST
Hi guys, just found out I am being posted back to Iraq next year and quite frankly I am not too happy about it. I have already done one tour out there and was hoping to see out my time without having to ever go back to that hot and dusty place, but hey, I joined up of my own free will so I guess I do what I have to do. So, for most of next year I will be enjoying the best that the middle east has to offer, lets just hope they are more friendlier this time! Can't wait to remake the acquaintances of the camel spiders, scary little critters, and the ants that are the size of your thumb! Ahhh, the smell of aviation fuel, dust and assorted fragments from the portaloos. Can life get any better?

Yuck. My dad just found out he's probably going to have to go back, too. He's a civilian, so it's even more of a 'choice'. I don't think that makes it suck any worse, though! I hope your tour is less uncomfortable than it was on your prior visit and that you return home safely. (My dad showed us some videos he took of the camel spiders, and I thought they were pretty cool! )

hi jakester sorry to hear that, maybe a new president might change things, we can only hope. I would not think Iraq would be a very friendly place for an american to be now, that'is for sure, but you have to go if they send you I guess. Just 'be sure to avoid any assorted fragments that look like artillery or grenades or any other nasty killing devices.lol spiders nad ants arent the worst I bet. well good luck and God bless.

Hi Hatley, not so sure a new president would change things for me as I am UK forces!!!!! Then again you never know...Iraq is not a freindly for any westerner at the moment.. not just Americans..they all seem to hate us all with equal amounts at the moment.. a big change from when I was there in 2003/2004.. they loved to se westerners in the streets. Perhaps there has been too much of an influx of "outside" interests going on. Now I am not saying it is Iran but whilst at Basrah we were shown the many historical attack areas that had been made by that country on Iraqi soil. Perhaps the West is only ther to PROTECT from outside insurgent activity.hmmm What do you think?
