Golden Flake

Does anyone have a Golden with a skin problem? My Sonny has a skin condition we've been unable to cure. Actually, the Vet can't even pinpoint a cause for it. At first he thought it might have something to do with his thyroid. But after taking one very expensive test we found that there was no cause for alarm there. His skin is constantly flaking off white flakes of skin. We use medicated shampoos but that just cleans the flakes off for a little while but it comes right back. We can't seem to find out what it is much less stop it. If you are experiencing that now, what are you doing for it? Sonny says, "Please Help me."

My golden has not had that problem. But have you tried checking with the members of pet forums? Yahoo has a group that is really interesting. It is made up of regular people like us and also breeders as well. I'll bet you could get some good advise from some of them on that one. I don't remember the name of the group as I have not been a member for some time but I'm sure it is still out there.

I have a golden retriever who also has the skin flaks... I was researching it and found that dogs with similiar skin problems, it has to do with the yeast in the some dog foods... I just switched my golden to Nature's Recipe (No Beef, Corn or wheat, No By-Products or fillers, No Artificial Preservations) It is for their skin and coat... I hope this helps...

I have a two labradors and both have skin problems. The are well know to have problems with there skin. You are doing the right thing with a medicated shampoo. The only other thing maybe is a food allergy? Again a bit of hassle trying different foods in and out of diet. Is he in pain? He looks good coat wise if that is him. Is it worrying him or you more as my vet always asks me. It's like anything if you want to put the poor things through test after test and not have the guarantee of an answer convert back to the question, are they in pain. Another thing to check are for fleas. I use capstar (tablet)every 2 days to start and then every week to 1 a fortnight. But with winter they are not as bad. Good luck to you both and all the best.

Thanks for your response bfitto. Yes that is him in the picture and he does have a beautiful coat. The flakes are more prominant around his underbelly and hardly noticable from the top. He is not in pain except for scratching once in a while, but not excessively so. I don't think he is allergic to any food which is probably why he is overweight. We spoil him rotten. Fleas are not a problem with "Sonny" because we keep him protected with "Frontline" every month. I'll bet those Labs are beautiful. A Lab was our next choice if we had not found him. Thanks again for your response.

Hmmm, Singout, I wonder if Singout has dandruff? Sounds silly I know, but who knows, maybe some head and shoulders or something. I know he isn't a human, but still. Good luck with that.
