Are you a Pickle Person?

Remember those big dill pickles from the deli in the grocery store? They sat in a big barrel on the counter. I loved those pickles, but I don't see them anymore. I never did like sweet pickles, I thought the idea of a pickle was to be sour? I use dill pickle relish in my tuna. I place thin sliced sandwich Clausen pickles in my peanut butter sandwich. I like pickle chips on my fishburger from BurgerKing. I ask for pickles at McDonald's, but they usually say no! Sometimes restaurants serve pickles on the side with a sandwich. What a treat! Have you made your own pickles or know someone who makes them? I never tried. I wonder if people make pickles anymore? Are you a pickle person? What kind do you like, what do you eat them with?

Okay, littleowl. Pickled onions? I've had caramelized onions on pasta, but I never heard of pickled onions! How do you eat one? Are they slices of onion? I'm having a really hard time picturing pickled onions. Do you feel like trying to explain it?

alright, I'm on the way to share a hot dog with you. Wait, never mind. I just ate a veggie hot dog, but I used mustard relish. I switch back and forth, because veggie dogs don't have too much taste and I use condiments to spice them up. Oh well, maybe next week I'll stop by.

Every other week my husband (Jerry) and I go to the corner deli for American cheese, corned beef, sardines, creamed cabbage w/pickle relish, eggplant, chopped liver w/onion, etc. (which you can't get in the supermarket) (I am making my own mouth salivate). My hubby must lift up the lid of the pickle barrel and inhale the smell of pickles!! I can't eat pickles or cucumbers because of seeds. so I don't buy it any more. I liked the kosher pickles, my father preferred sliced butter pickles, and Jerry liked the briny kind. In the restaurant, when ordering a burger, a slice of pickle is put on the plate, so I give it to Jerry. My mother used to make her own pickled cucumbers and pickled beets. I have an older friend who makes her own pickled cucumbers. I never tried peanut butter with pickles, though.

Janet- thanks for your story. I'm trying to picture everything in my mind. I have to be honest though, I don't think we like the same foods! I love knowing there are still places in America where you can buy all those things at the corner deli. My brother can't eat seeds either, or my mom. Bummer. but it sounds like Jerry is happy! I was just asking GardenGerty what briny means? salt? This is my dumb day and it's almost over, so I have to get all my dumb questions out of the way. All this talk of pickles, and I don't have any to eat! I did put pickle relish on my veggie chik patty for dinner. That tasted pretty good. But not as good as a deli pickle by far!

I like the really sour garlic dill pickles. No sweet ones for me. I like the kind that they give you in some restaurants on a plate. Usually you get them in a deli-like restaurant when you order a lunch meal. The more sour the better. I remember the big barrels of pickles. It's a shame that you don't see them anymore! I lile pickles with any kind of sandwich, burger, but I've never wanted them with peantbutter. But if you like it, it's ok with me!

Opal. That's what makes the restaurant pickles so tasty. They're more sour. I like finding people like you on mylot because they give me more ideas. I learned about the peanut butter and pickles sandwich years ago when I used to watch the 1/2 hour sitcom with Bill Cosby. The little girl made that sandwich and it sounded so weird, I had to try it. and I did end up liking it, even though it was meant as a joke.

I guess I am a pickle person, too. I loved those big pickles they used to serve on the side with a hamburger. I guess some restaurants still do.I also like pickles on my tuna sandwiches, but it has to be sweet pickle relish for me. they used to make sweet India relish but I haven't seen that for ages. It had little balls of something in it- seeds of some sort. I never tried peanut butter and pickles. You are adventurous with your food! I like pickles with hot dogs and hamburgers. I once made a german roulade, which is meat rolled up with a pickle and an egg inside. It was good.

getnbuy - I like the sound of the roulade. I bet it's not easy to make though. And not practical for me because I don't eat meat or eggs. I can't say that I've ever seen India relish either, it sounds much more adventuresome than pb and pickles. I never tried the sweet relish, only the dill. Now, I have found two people who put relish in their tuna. It's nice not to be alone in the world. Pickle eaters of mylot unite! Sorry, this is my silly night.

kun - a deep fried pickle? Really? I never heard of that. Are you teasing me? I'm not a vegetable person and that is very funny because I'm a vegetarian! I figure I get all my veggies in one of those veggie burgers. I did force myself to eat green peas tonight.

When I was young you could always find those pickle jars in just about any local gas store that you went into. Then they started putting them in individual plastic bags. Now you can't find them unless you buy them out of the grocery store. Pickles love them sweet or dill, I have always liked pickles. Now Valsic pickles are the bomb. They even make sandwich size pickles. Have you tried them? And they always have a crunch.

I'm from the south and here we use to have to country stores that had them in the jar. I don't think that the grocery stores had them in the jars. But now they come in a bag individual the large dill pickles. Then you have the in the jar but if you notice they are not as being as the use to be. Have a good one.

twallace - No, I'm a Clausson girl pickle eater. Those are really crunchy. I like the sandwich slices they sell in the produce area. They come chilled, that's why they're not with the other pickles. I don't remember seeing the pickle jars in the gas stores, only the grocery stores. And all the seeds were floating on top, too bad they always get rid of the good stuff!

Okay anawar, you stopped me with the pickle and peanut butter sandwich. I don't mean to be rude at all but that just sounds so disgusting to me....sorry! But however, yes I like pickles. I love it when it is served with a sandwich or if I go to a diner and order a cheeseburger deluxe, the pickle will be on the side. How come McDonald's where you live don't put pickles on your sandwich? They do it here where I live. Take care anawar!.

Linda - oh come on. Just try a pb and pickle sandwich. I know you'll love it and you'll think I'm so smart for giving you the idea. I know, it does sound disgusting. sorry. I think the kid at the McD's I'm thinking of didn't like me. I asked if I could please have a few pickles, and no kidding, he looked right into my eyes and said "No." It was so bizarre. I turned to my ex-lover and looking him in the eyes I said "no." loud enough for the kid to hear me. I didn't get a pickle, but it was funny. What a goofy kid.

I like the sweet midgets and that's about it. Never cared for sour stuff or dill pickles. My dogs love them, though. On the rare occasion I get a burger out, I don't ask them to hold the pickle because I like the bit of flavor they give. I give my two dogs the pickles and they love them!

dragon - hi. That figures. It seems dogs either love them or hate them. A person I loved and lost when I joined this website used to put pickles on the burgers from McDonald's he gave his dogs. They managed to eat the entire burger and spit out the pickles! I don't know what it is about McDonald's pickles, but if I manage to charm some out of the cooks, they are the best pickles ever! I can't believe McD's has the best pickles. I've tried every brand in the store, and none are as good.

I am a HUGE cold brine dill pickle fan! My husband's grandfather used to make them and they are soooo good! I miss them very much. I settle for Claussen now. They are so great on just about everything. I like sweet relish in my chicken salad, and I am still trying to fgure out if I like the home made sweet pickles. Glad to see someone else loves pickles too!

Thanks Amanda. I don't shop at Wal-Mart in protest to their business tactics. But that's a whole different story. Thanks for adding more suggestions for me. There are some bulk grocery stores here. I'll check those out next time the need for pickles overwhelms me. travel lightly

Anawar, I can't keep pickles in the house...even the chip ones~everyone loves them! I love the sour and salty taste of a pickle. I don't care for sweet pickles or bread n butter. I have always wanted to make my own and homemade pickles are a rare treat these days. I'd like to grow my own dill and cucumbers anyway. I think the dill plants are so pretty. I like a pickle on the side of sandwiches, definitely pickle relish in my tuna. Extra pickles on my cheeseburger. Pickles by themselves are good and it is hard to eat just one sometimes. I love the little midget pickles!!!! But, one thing I have never had~pickles on a peanut butter sandwich??? Sounds um...interesting.

PaperJane - Yea! someone else who puts pickle relish in their tuna. You're so close to pb and pickle sandwiches, it's only one small step away. I know it sounds yucky, but I get tired of jam or bananas, and peanut butter fills me up when I'm in a hurry! Those dill plants are very pretty. I used to be able to grow lots of green things, but I've been moving around too much to settle in and grow some plants. I'm looking forward to it. Do you have to buy pickles every week, or do you buy them in bulk? I don't like the sweets or the bread and butter either. They don't taste very "picklely" to me!

anne - Oh, those poor pickles! They must be so sad not to be eaten by you. Gosh, I'm really sorry. I feel like goofing around here on mylot and sometimes I get too silly. I like hearing things about the Philippines, I'm glad you joined in. My only problem is, I keep getting mixed up trying to spell out the name of your country! I think it's the combination of the l's and i's that are so close together, especially the way they show up on the computer. Well, have a good night. It's 10pm here and I'm getting ready to sign off. Thanks for stopping by. If you have any tricks for helping me spell Philippines without looking it up every time, let me know, okay thanks.

i dont eat them that much, but i do like them in home made burgers and also when we have fish, we use pickles and mayo to make our own sauce which is really good, but my daughters (15 and 11) absolutely LOVE pickles. when they come home from school, do they ask for a cookie? NO, they get a pickle or 2 out of the fridge for their snack.

Oooooo pickles... big dill pickles. I'm the same way, I can eat pickles on just about everything. We've still got those big dills but not in the barrel. They come in individually wrapped plastic bags full of juice. They're soooo good. I have to be really careful anymore though, I have high blood pressure so I have to keep my salt intake to a minimum so no big pickles anymore... oh it's so sad

craftcatcher - It's so hard to eat those big pickles, I get the juice all over me. I have the opposite salt problem from you. I don't get enough salt in my diet. Sometimes I grab the olive jar and eat six or seven right out of the jar, using a spoon. I know I need salt when that happens. I'll look for the pickles wrapped in plastic. Thanks

I love pickles. Yes I do remember the barrel of pickles that sat on the deli counter. I also remember the deli selling the pickle in a package that were sold individually. Those were pretty good too. I like all kinds of pickles. My favorite are the garlic dills, but also like sweet pickles, kosher, bread and butter pickles and spicy dill. My husband made our own pickles once and they were very good.
