why is spam called spam?

i get a lot of spam emails on a daily basis and as i was deleting them this morning i wondered why they are called spam? does anyone know?

spam is 'short pointless annoying messages' although it may or it may not always be short.

is that really what it stands for!? that's quite funny! you're right they're not always short, i don't bother to open them usually, just delete them straight away!
