Children influenced by TV Good or bad?.... My 2 year old son...

My 2 year old son has certain programs he enjoys watching on TV, he does not watch TV all day, of course. I have noticed that if let's say "Dora is at the Beach... my son HAS to go to the beach that second (ummm we do not as Dora is on at 6PM), if Little Bill is eating a cupcake he HAS to have a cupckae immediately!, or Micky Mouse saying "nope" instead of 'no" Now on the flipside of this, when the Count is Counting, my son follows along with him. it's very hard to decide what is good and what is bad when it comes to the TV shows on now, how does everyone else deal with this?

Not everything shown in TV is good and that is a fact. Well I suggest you try to filter what your kid gets to watch. Have you tried to watch the shows with him? If you have not yet then perhaps its time that you do. A parent always knows what is best for their child so if you see that the TV show does not come into par with your standards then chances are they are not good for your child. Its not that I'm bitter with the current kid shows nowadays, but I think most of them are making the next generation a bit more stupid and lazy. Interacting with your child is still the best option and it has so many bonus benefits with it.

Hi, yes I do watch the programs with my child, alot of times he does have questions about what people/characters on the program are doing, and we spen that time together when we are not at the park, or playing outside. It's sort of like a Wind-down for him. His tv is limited to 2 hours a day 1 in the AM and 1 in the PM. Good advise! Thank you

It depends on us parents. i myself censors the shows my kids are watching. As much as possible i choose only those that teaches good values to them. it is really hard because we can not be with them all the time while they re watching. But there are many tips we can get from other parents and from the internet of the kind of show that are really good for our kids. here in our country, there is this "seal" that appears on the upper left corner of the show. As an indication that is advisable for kids to watch.

I also have a 2 yr old son and since we don't have cable or satellite he is limited to what he watches. Pretty much only PBS cartoons and DVDs that we have, mostly Disney. Mine counts with the shows and sometimes gets some of the letters in there too. He will also always sing with them too. I have yet to have him want to do something that they are doing yet. Well sometimes he'll want to eat what they are eating and I have to explain to them that we don't have it or it's not time for him to eat, but he's hasn't wanted to go anywhere because of a show yet. However what your talking about is exactly why we limit his TV time and what he watches. I prefer for the most part for them to be learning shows like PBS has. One of the reasons we don't have cable is because me and my hubby barely watch TV, so why do we want to pay for a bunch of channels that we don't want our kids to watch, kind of point less and money wasting. Not that all cable programs are bad, I just know that the kids shows my kids are watching are good if their on PBS.

Hi, thank you for the response. I also limit TV time for my son. I do agree if you do not really watch it why pay for it, we watch PBS and Noggin, I think nick (unless Nick jr.) is not such a great influence that sponge dude is pretty rude! We also have DVD's mostly Elmo and Little Einsteins, he enjoys those. He may just one day stop "wanting" what the characters on the program are eating or heading to the beach, which is fine... just not at 6pm LOL

TV is fine, as long as he gets up and in th e frsh air for exercise/play too! Just tell your child the rules of the house and let him know he can watch what he wants, but the minute he misbehaves and it is from any show..he's out of luck! As long as he behaves well, no reason for him not to watch, as long as he can also have lots of craon and play time! (Kids need that!)

I totally agree, fresh air is the bet! Play time and learing time, which is incorporated into our play is more stimulating to a child and more satisfying I believe. Thanks for the response!!!

First of all, TV itself is a reason why a lot of children are obese. That's the only negative effect that TV itself can afflict on children. That's why I believe it is important to cut down on the use of TV during the day and more time running around and playing sports. Television shows can be a good influence and a bad influence at the same time on children. It depends on the show they are watching. For example, show's such as Dora The Explorerâ„¢, Barney & Friends, Maggie & The Ferocious Beast, etc. contain a positive affect towards children because they usually are taught life lessons while watching the show such as sharing, making new friends, being polite, etc. Television shows can sometimes be a bad influence towards children if they are watching violent shows which often is usually imitated later on in life. Shows such as Naruto, Wrestling, Ultimate Fighting Challenge, and other shows with the same genre. Wrestling may be fake in the show, but when copied, it's the real deal. A lot of deaths have been reported because children have copied wrestling. Even though shows may show the message for example "The actions should not be repeated at home". That doesn't do anything, it just helps the show prevent lawsuits. I don't really deal with it, because as a child, I knew not to copy any kind of violence I watched on Television so it wasn't much of an influence on me.

Very well stated! We have a channel Noggin here, I think it's affiliated with Nick, and we watch PBS. I limit my son to 1 hour in the AM and 1 in the evening after dinner. I have never even heard of those Naruto, or Wrestling programs you have mentioned, not so sure I would even want to watch one as an adult, let alone have my 2 yeard old view something of that nature.

The shows that your child watch are actually designed to be good because they teach children however imitating them is a different matter. Just make sure that you make your child understand what he is watching so that he would learn how to do it the proper way.

Yes, but t's very hard, especially at his age. I also have one thet is 22 and cannot remember him ever having gone thru this... Maybe shows are more interesting now. I get afraid that maybe he is bored, not stimulated.. but we do everything together, sandbox time, cooking, colr, reading time, learning time. I get confused that maybe I am not giving enough to him, maybe he needs more?

You should just let him watch Sesame Street. I don't know how to deal with that because I'm not in that position but I wouldn't give in to it.
