Nobody ever agrees with each other, not that I know. For those who do like it, "what say you?" LOL (Yes, I am rather nerdy) Legolas was the only character to not get hurt, not even in the extended edition. But I'd have to say Merry, he kills like eight Orcs in a row, can't believe they cut it out, in the ROTK. Or Gandalf. Because he's just Gandalf. Personally, in the movie(not in real life, I found Aragon sexier than Legolas.

Oh, I'm gonna get so much flack for this, but I say...Sam. Why Sam? Because he went because of his love for Frodo. Not because he didn't want to be left out, like Merry and Pip, not because he felt it was his duty to see the ring destroyed, but because he loved Frodo. Sam was not particularly brave, nor particularly smart or even strong. Yes, Aragorn is awesome, as are Legolas, Gandalf, Gimli, and even Boromir. They all had some skills to see them through the journey (although clearly that didn't work out so well for Boromir). Merry and Pip were essentially there by accident, and while they both availed themselves wonderfully, they can't live up to Sam for me. Sam went through hell and back to keep Frodo safe, to make sure Frodo survived his journey - and he faced down a lot of nasty stuff in the process, no small feat for shy, unsure Sam. So Sam gets my vote. Go on and laugh at me, it's okay.

I totally agree! I actually think Sam is the main character of the books (and the movie, because, really, without him the Ring would never have been destroyed.

You know what a lot of people wouldn't think of Sam as a kick butt character but the way you describe him he is. He is the only one that really risked his life and was there with Frodo until the very end.

For me it has to be Gimli the dwarf. He is just champing at the bit in every skirmish and battle. I think the way the actor who plays this character mixes comedy in with the war scenes is very clever and I have to say that he is my second favourite character in the book and film, even above Bilbo!

Gimli the dwarf gets my vote too because he positively loves a good rumble. He is so very believable so my hat is off to that great actor. i like the fact he plays with his beard and takes everyone on as if he were born for armed combat.

Frodo is really the toughest and has to endure the most, but he ends up coming off like a whiny *bad word deleted*. Gandalf is by far the most powerful character, I mean ya Merry kills a crap load of Orcs, but Gandalf stands up to the Balrog, and defeats him. Of course Gandalf is a Maiar of Valinor so really he is basically a demigod himself so his power makes him damn near unbeatable by anyone but Saruman or Sauron, unless a Valar came to Middle Earth, or if Morgoth returned. So if you take only ordinary non gods into account I still wouldn't say Legolas, while he was kicking serious butt in the movies really only in Helms deep does he show himself as anything but a good archer in either the books or the movies. I think the Ents, particularly Treebeard are the toughest not god characters. They destroy Saruman's defenses and his whole Orc factory. (and you thought YOU were a geek)

I think it's Aragorn, even in real life. Hollywood actors are always cowards but Viggo actually done his own stunt.

That has to be Aragorn. He's a character who has to go through such overwhelming challenges like ensuring that the ringbearer reaches mount doom and destroy the ring, reclaim his rightful heritage as the King of Gondor and marry the love of his life Arwen which he must fulfill the 2nd task before he can do that. Gandalf too is an admirable character. His knowledge, guidance and leadership throughout the trilogy was critical to the success the mission.

I like Legolas on and off the screen, but only in the Lord of the Rings. His other movies like Troy and Kingdom of Heaven do not impress me much. For me, the one who kick butt the most is definitely Aragon. I really like his character, but off the screen, he is a bit soft.
