http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20080731/Manitoba_victim_080801 I can't believe it, the murderer is only being charged with second degree murder, why not first degree, he sat there and deliberately killed a man. And worst still, the RCMP never advised the family and the media were the first to approach them. I just can't get over that, a journalist is the first to come to your door to ask how do you fee about your son's murder or whatever, this is just so wrong. Open comments for responses on this one, tell us how you feel about how this situation is being handled by everyone.

It is being handled wrong. I agree with you he killed a man he should be charged with first degree murder. I have a hard time understanding why these crimanals aren't charged like they should be anymore. It is getting crazy.

I guess they will say it wasn't premediated that he was insane, or some crap like that.

Proberly that is about how most of these criminals get out of trouble. By pleading insane.

The difference between first and second degree murder is that first degree must be premeditated. If they can prove that he intended to get on the bus and had pre-planned to kill someone, then they could upgrade the charges to first degree murder. But if he just snapped and all of a sudden killed someone without planning in advance to do so, then it would be second degree murder. The RCMP probably only had enough evidence at the time to charge him with second degree murder. But as they investigate it more they might find enough to increase the charges.

I actually started a post on the subject in case you haven't seen it yet BUT I stand to be corrected on my one comment to a myLot friend. I thought it was the police that knocked at the door of the boys parents. The story gets worse as the days go by. If it was the media that informed the parents then without a doubt that should be punishable by law. How would you feel if that was you? I can not imagine and I don't even want to. The whole story caused me a sleepless night. Now what's going through my mind is, "What are they going to do about this idiot," well naturally put him in confined security, give him all the medical help they feel he needs, feed him better than we eat and keep charging us tax payers through the roof to keep the crimminals safe, warm and well fed. I am sorry but that's how I feel.

They did at least say it may be upgraded to first degree, so let's hope that is what happens!

It is sad when an injustice such as this happens. I feel that some people were sitting down on their jobs and not doing them. How the heck they supposed to feel..is what they should have said. I mean it is tramatic enough to lose a loved one then something like that happens. That is just like icing on the cake for that murderer. Shame thought that the media approached them first.

Yeah, Counselling will only help so much. I do hope these people will be able to go about their lives as normally as they can after such a traumatic event.

Wow!! If someone from the media has been the FIRST to inform me, I think I'd sue the RCMP or whoever, for not taking better care to infor the victim's family before informing the danged media. That's just not wring. I've been following this story on the radio, and they're talking abou it at the cae, but your posted pieces have helped me to get the most information. Thank you! Please keep up the good work. Walker told me they have been covering this on CNN. I guess not having a T means I would miss a lot o coverage.

the police has not released the info yet, to anybody, it was leaked by his friends on facebook, and that is how it got to the media according to the article.

Look at my comment below. It's now beneath the radar of sensational American news, but this guy is definitely lucky he did this in Canada. Now he'll never be homeless and will have free room and board for the rest of his life.

After reading the article about this that you posted. I was on the 11:00pm news and I was like they are late with the news. I already found out about it. Then today they had a news release in the my lot news about a man shooting 3 kids and 1 one was wounded. It made me think about this. He was only 22 years old and lost his life on a bus ride. Something that we think would be safe cause there are others around. But this didn't stop the man from killing him. Thanks for the update also since I'm not from Canada I decided to bookmark the news like to check out what is going on from Canada news too.

Any responsible journalist should understand that, until the police have notified the next of kin, they stay totally away from the story. The fact that the RCMP hadn't notified the family, is inexcusable. I was under the impression that they were more responsible than that.

they are a great police force, I don't know why they didn't act upon it faster, and yes the media is too blame here too. I can only imagine that poor family getting some creep coming to the door saying something stupid like how do you feel about your son or brother (it was a brother) in this case being killed in that fashion.

I think the world is coming to an end-people like to vent their frustrations on innocent others who may not at all be onnected to these personal problems-in my city two days ago, a mother got rat poison and killed all her four children-reason: Her hubby is having an affair-how strange this world is turning out to be.

My brother told me about this the other day when he called. It wasn't in the papers here (UK) so I was quite surprised to hear it. You just don't think anything that violent could happen in Canada. Things must have changed since the last time I was there. I don't understand the charge. The guy knew what he was doing. You can't do that to someone and not know the end results. This is appalling. I thought the victim was asleep. I can't even imagine what his reaction was during this horrendous assault. This should be first degree murder because that is what it is. It is going to take a long time for the other passengers to get over this, to deal with it. The cops have this one wrong. They should have been the one to notify the victim's family. They have not handled this properly at all. What is this world coming to? There is so much violence, so much hatred. When and where is it all going to stop?

Yeah.. it is utterly disgusting to hear that it has become more or less the order of the day.. And it really springs no surprise that the fella is charged with a second degree murder,..when the justice can be easily done with money..

hi winterose, it still bugs me that nobody tried to stop the man granted he had a big knife but surely wouldnt a number of men be able to overpower him, or was the weapon too big and they were all scared, I mean come on it takes a while to cut off someones head, oh this is so grisly, makes me shiver to think a bout it and it was handled badly afterwards too. What a shock that would have been to be asked those questions when they had not yet been told. my.

Wow, that's very bizarre and creepy and horrifying. Something is seriously wrong with that man, to kill an innocent man while he's sleeping! And then to take the head and show it off?? Very unbelieveable. So sad. I would also hate to find out some tragic news like that. The family and close friends should have been made aware of this. That's very horrible!

I read the link that you had and then read the story from the day before. I was shaking and crying after reading this and I'm not the type to get upset about things like this. I am shocked as well that this crazed person will not get charged with 1st degree, but not knowing what the laws are in Canada, I would have to assume that 2nd degree has something to do with the mental status of the criminal. It's clear cut that the guy was not in his right mind when he attacked his seat mate in that way. DCMerkle

Hmm...probably his defense has something to do with insanity or whatever medical condition coz those usually carry light sentences. Besides, even the system can fail us too you know.

how awful to find out that way. the police should have got to them first. Stupid on their part not to. also they should have been there to stop reporters right from the first. as it is this feller might get off for mistakes that police are making!
