It is more expensive to eat healthy!

A number of years ago someone told me their excuse for not eating healthy was because they couldn't afford to. I thought that was total rubbish, who can't afford to eat healthy? Well, today I learned that is true! I have been trying to eat a lot healthier lately, so today I stocked up on health food. Normally when I do the grocery shopping I can spend about $200 tops, and that's when buying formula and diapers and make up and those sorts of things. Today I didn't buy any of that, I bought nothing but food at the grocery store and my bill was $220. I bought a lot of fruit and vegetables, a few different kinds of fruit juice, a healthier brand of cereal, some granola bars... well it all added up. Fruit and vegetables are expensive as all heck, and there aren't any cheaper choices, but if you want to buy cookies you can find a generic brand that tastes about the same but costs far less. The fact that food prices are constantly on the rise and not coming down even though the price of gas is doesn't help the situation. Do you find yourself passing up healthy choices due to the price? Do you think the economy and cost of food is a good excuse not to eat healthy?

We buy lots of fresh vegetables and have splurged on lots of cantaloupe this year. But we let the fruits go, although they are tempting. I was tempted to buy some great peaches today, but the price just didn't fit my budget. It is terrible that we aren't able to buy the things that we really need, especially when you have children. I know my grandkids would love fruit, but their Mom can't afford to buy it. She will occasionally buy a bunch of grapes or a bag of green Granny apples, but they need lots of them. And with four kids, it's a given she can't afford them, being a single Mom. We don't even buy them! I did buy oranges a few times in the winter and a few apples. But I decided they were just too expensive. I don't think most people who have a low income could hardly afford to eat healthy like they say we should and pay bills and put clothes on their children's back. Today was one of three days here where there is NO sales tax on anything. I saw one young woman's buggy (she looked in late 20's with a child) FULL, I mean PACKED full with everything imaginable in the grocery section of WalMart, including lots of meat and fruit and vegetables. I though, gosh, her Bill is going to be $400!! But I guess she was getting a month's supply and putting them in the freezer. I spend from $80 to $120 every week just for the two of us and I sure don't get that much meat and fruits that she had. Are you all having this savings weekend from taxes? I had first heard on the news that that particular city where I go shopping lots was not on the list for the savings on taxes. Then, I approached a retail store and saw the sign, plus they were having a 70% off sale, so I bought 3 blouses for $18.

We do have a weekend like that, but it's usually the end of August. School here starts in September, so one of the last weekends in August they will do no sales tax. I'm usually done with school shopping by then though. Normally I do not buy fresh fruit or veggies. I will buy canned or frozen, as it is much cheaper. Because yes, my children have to have them, but I do not want to spend that much money on them.

We do buy canned fruit. I had forgotten about that. My husband usually keeps canned peaches on hand all the time. He loves them for a snack. I like fruit cocktail and I usually buy the smaller cans and eat a whole one. We used to eat the canned peaches on cornflakes, and that is good, too. We love applesauce, too. So I guess all that could be part of our required fruits, although I love the fresh apples and peaches better. We planted peach and apple trees when we first moved here, but we put cows in the pasture and they ate our trees. We never got anything off of them. We had two plum trees too, the big red ones, and they made such a mess in our yard, my husband cut them down. That didn't make me mad at all! Those things are so messy when they fall on the ground and rot.

You might want to look into clipping coupons. There was a discussion on here yesterday from dknlovely about that. Some people have it down to a science and can have like a 96.00 bill go down to 13.00 or something like that. Look up that discussion I think you'll be impressed. YOu may end up with alot of money left over.

There aren't coupons for fruits, vegetables, and generic brand foods. I never buy name brand unless there is no generic version to it. I used to clip coupons ages ago, but learned quickly it only makes the bill worse because instead of buying 1 of whatever you want, you have to buy 2 or more, and I save more money buying the generic.

You are right. Eating healthy is costly. We have been trying to eat a healthy diet for a couple of years. But it is expensive to by the food that is good for you. We spent $200 on Saturday to buy our monthly food. Stocking up on lean proteins like chicken and fish was about $120 dollars of that and the rest went to fruit and vegetables. We buy frozen vegetables because we can get a months supply at once, I would much rather buy it fresh. But with fruit we have to buy every couple of days. This month is going to be hard because we had a $650 utility bill because we had a hot month in June. So I do not know where I will get the money to continue to buy fruit for the rest of the month. Fruit seems to cost as much per pound now as meat does. It is expensive. While vegetables are still reasonable in price. I am so tempted to just buy bags of chips and other junk food. It is so much better priced then the healthy food.

It is more expensive to eat healthy. The really good food items are the most expensive. Thats because the providers can make more money out of them than the not so good items. Its profit, thats what governs everything.

I agree with you that it is more expensive eating healthy. I often try to buy plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables but the prices are mind boggling to say the least and I end up buying frozen foods instead but our freezer is not big enough to stock enough of those for everyday consumption and that would be vegetables only still..

I feel that when I am trying to lose weight and eat right. That is costs a lot more money. Produce is not Cheap! When I am not trying to lose weight I seem to stock up on things like Pasta and things that are very high in carbs, and for some reason those things are way cheaper.

Yes I'm having that problem as well. My family is used to a side dish every day of either pasta or potato, as they are cheap, but as you said, they're full of carbs. Anything else you try to buy is too expensive. Regular pasta is $1 a box, but the whole wheat pasta can run you $3-4.

It's sad but true. Fresh fruits and vegies are way more expensive than junk food. And, try finding something healthy to grab at a chain store like 7/11. If you have a farmers market close by you can get deals by buying bulk. You can freeze fruits and vegetables for use in the winter. I also watch for fields where they have just picked beans and potatoes, they allow you to go through and get what you can after the pickers go through.

It is true, it is really expensive to eat healthy! I shop to what I can afford and if that means that I dont buy healthy food then that is tough! I am not going to skint myself for the sake of food.
