Nephew in terrible car wreck

Our nephew was in a terrible car accident two nights ago. He was in the backseat which is probably the only thing that saved him. The driver was killed instantly and his wife is still critical. Our nephew has multiple skull fractures. They operated, and the doctor says he has some brain damage but they won't know the extent until all the swelling goes down and he can come off the breathing tube. Then they will be able to do more test. One good sign is that he's trying to move his arms and legs. They were scared he was going to be paralized. We hope and pray that when the swelling goes down things will get better. Maybe the pressure is what's showing up as brain damage. Prayers are gladly appreciated!

That is a real shame that someone was killed in that accident and I hope your nephew will be alright. Of course my thoughts are with you and yours. I hope that he will be able to regain the use of his arms and legs and he gets back to normal. It might be a long road but count your blessings. Once again, my prayers are with you.

Thank you. I do believe he's going to have a long recovery. I know he had a good job, but don't know if he had health insurance. I sure hope he did and that it is helping with all this.

I know this is not the right time to be thinking about this, but the driver's auto insurance should be paying for your nephew's medical care. I just wanted to let you know that so you could stop worrying about that end of it.

Yeah I wasn't thinking about that. The other driver's insurance paid. I don't know what I was thinking.

My heart goes out to you and your family, and my condolences for the family of the deceased driver. I will be praying that your nephew will pull through without any permanent disabilities. It is a good sign that he is trying to use his limbs. May God bless your family

I hope it turns out that he is all right. This is so hard on the families. It is also sad that he lost his friends. A lot of times once the swelling goes down the functions return. I pray that he is one of those.

We just talked with his parents and they said it's looking better. He is fighting the straps holding him down when they don't keep him sedated. The doctors say thats a good sign, but they can't let him move and rebreak anything so they have to keep him sedated for the time being. Thank you for the prayers.

I'm so glad to hear he's looking better. His parents must be feeling a little bit of relief about that. I'm sure he's scared about being secured in bed, but hopefully, people can explain to him why that has to be done. Thanks for letting me know how he's doing. I am very interested in his progress, sunnflr.

They said he seems to respond to people's voices. That's one of the problems, he wants to move when people talk. I'll keep you updated.

I am sorry to hear about your nephew and I really hope that he will be OK. What a terrible thing to happen, and that poor lady has lost her husband that is so sad, I also hope that she will be OK too.

I know, I can't imagine. I don't know yet whether she pulled through herself. They all live in Lousiana and we are having to call for updates. I hope the lady is ok and has family there with her.

I am so sorry to hear that! It always hits home hard when it happens to someone close to us. I'm sorry for the driver and pray for his wife and their families! I'm glad to hear that your nephew is alive and somewhat alert (trying to move his arms and legs). That is an excellent sign after two days! Whenever there is swelling of the brain, there is brain damage. The pressure against the skull kills some of the brain cells. Also, when the head is violently slammed forward, backward or sideways, the brain "crashes" into the skull. What most people don't know, though, is just how miraculous the brain really is! It "reroutes" signals around the damaged areas. Sometimes, actually a lot of the time, the damage to the brain is not noticeable at all once it has healed completely. Your nephew may need therapy, but there's a pretty good chance that he will recover with no permanant damage at all since he is already showing signs of movement after only two days! I worked with a woman whose daughter was hit by a car and was in a coma for two weeks with no signs of movement at all. When she came out of the coma, she had only a slight problem with speech but that was cleared up with therapy. I have a very good feeling that your nephew is going to do fine. I will pray for him. Try not to get too stressed! I won't do any good if you get sick!!! Please remember to take care of yourself and your nephew's parents.

Thank you for this response. I was thinking the same thing. Told my husband that maybe once the swelling was down things would improve greatly. Yesterday they said the therapist came in to move his legs and stuff and Timmy started doing it himself. The guy said that was great! He'd tell him what to do and Timmy would do it. They said that was a very good sign.

I don't know if you saw my update but he got to go home yesterday. The doctors can't believe how well he's doing. He can't do anything at home, but they said he could heal just as well there.
