I don't like requesting a service call to fix an appliance, do you?

I am frustrated right now because I'm worried our ice maker is on the fritz. Back in 2007, we bought a Sears Elite Refrigerator with an ice maker. It's worked great. Three weeks ago, I clicked off the ice maker as we took a 5 day vacation.
A few hours ago, we noticed we had completely run out of ice! Uh oh. Then, I realized I'd never clicked the ice maker back on after returning from our trip. So, I turned it back on. However, we can usually hear the water turn on and trickle into the ice tray then turn off.
Alas, we haven't heard the ice tray fill up yet. So, I called the Sears 800 number and the Customer Service Rep says it can take up to 2 or 3 hours or more before the water trickles in. Well, it's 10 minutes shy of 3 hours and we haven't heard the ice tray fill up.
Needless to say, I am so bummed out! If I wake up tomorrow and there's no ice, I'm gonna have to call Sears back and request a service call. So, I'm hoping for ice in the morning.
Do you hate requesting a service call like I do? Waiting on the guy to show up, hoping it's not gonna cost an arm and a leg. Do you ever try to fix your appliances yourself?

yes i know what you mean, these days people have told me that once you have had an applicance for some years and it breaks down in the long run it is just better to go buy a new one, as repairs cost so much and that once something starts breaking down it is usually an on going thing...i was told it is a throw away world these days, things are made that way...

Hello lilaclady. We've only had the fridge for about 1 year and it was brand new when we bought it. It's still under warranty. I'm hoping there will be ice in the bin by tomorrow a.m. Wish me luck as there's no way we would be replacing the entire fridge.

My husband has been keeping the washer from the 1980s going, the fridge needs servicing, it's freezing everything in the middle of it. Must think we need more freezer space. I turn the temp down and everything else is too warm. Just been keeping things off that shelf or putting things we want to wait a couple of days to eat there. But I know if I call, it will only be around$50 plus parts and only if he uses new ones which he may not. Take care

It can be so frustrating to try to keep appliances in good working order. Yes, the cost of service calls have just gone up and up. However, I do have to have my appliances in good working condition, so we usually pay out whatever it takes. I guess that's why I get so freaked out if I think something is working right. But, my ice maker did start working again after I saw a sticker in the freezer that said to "press and hold" the on button for 15 seconds "to advance the ice maker."
Thank heavens. Do take care, writersedge. I wish you luck with the freezer. Sounds like your husband is pretty skilled at repairing appliances.

Yes, it is frustrating.
My husband repairs and builds stuff for a living, so he certainly comes in handy.

Hi vanities.
That's great that you don't mind making service calls. So many of us hate them that we put off making that initial call. In this case, I was very lucky because I figured out I had to press and hold a button for 15 seconds to get the ice maker going, since it didn't just start when I pushed the on button. You sound like a very patient person.
Take care and thank you for taking part in this discussion.

I, too, am a person that's just gotta having things working at my house. If it doesn't work, I want it outta here! Anyhoo, I was lucky in that the ice maker is now working. Yesterday, I noticed a sticker in the freezer that said, "Press and Hold the "on" button for 15 seconds to advance the ice maker." Well, I don't know what they mean by "advance" it, but I held it for 20 seconds just to be safe.
And, sure enough, within 30 seconds or so, I heard the water trickle in the tray and I was so happy! When my husband came inside, I told him he missed the happy dance.
Take care, jill.

Sears is one of the worse for calling for repairs. We had a washing machine that had problems. We called out the repairman once, and they replaced the washer. Then, the next time it had a problem, he tried to tell us it would cost us $800 to get the panel in the washer fixed AND, we found we couldn't order it and fix it ourselves. If my husband could have bought the part, he could have fixed it. He did all our electrical work when we built our house and he's worked on other electrical appliances. But this is how they get you! We just bought another washer and the other one is still sitting in my laundry room and looks like a brand new one. My husband said he'd keep it for parts in case something happened to this one.

Yes, I have heard these issues about Sears and experienced them many years ago. That is so annoying that they wouldn't let you order the part so your husband could make the repair. I'm hoping there's ice in the bin in the morning.
Sorry to hear about your frustrations with your washer.
Take care.

I hope you have ice in the bin tomorrow, too. My Mother is having the same problem with her ice maker - refrigerator from Sears. It has done this before, but usually you could move the arm or rearrange the bin (it sometimes gets off track) and it would start making ice, but the tray won't fill up on hers, either. This has been going on several weeks. I just bought a bag of ice and poured half in there and then later poured the other half. She has 3 ice trays for emergencies. I should have bought her some ice today too.
Our ice maker has been broke in our Frigidaire side by side for years. Our refrigerator is 32 years old, so we know it can't be fixed. So we have about 8 ice trays by it, and we just empty them and put the ice in the bin. We've done it for many years. The problem was in the line and my husband could never get the ice maker to work correctly after replacing it.It would fill up but only half freeze before emptying out so we just unplugged it.

Your message is 16 hours old now, I wonder if your ice machine works? If not was the water valve turned off too when the ice maker was turned off? Other than the cable guy I never had to do a service call. I usually take care of it myself. Good Luck!

Hi benhilo.
Yes, the ice maker is working now. I was thrilled yesterday when I noticed a sticker in the freezer that said to press and hold the "on" button to "advance" the ice maker. Well, I didn't really know what they meant by "advance" but I held it for 20 seconds. Sure enough, the water trickled in about 30 seconds later.
I had not turned the water valve off so I assumed that wasn't the problem. Anyhoo, I was so thrilled that it started working again. My husband said we're not turning it off anymore, even when we leave for a trip.
I re-read the book that came with it and it does say it has a wire arm that automatically shuts it off if the ice dispenser gets too full of ice. It isn't the kind of wire arm, though, that you can manually lift and the book says not to do that.
I do have to shut off the ice maker when I change the water filter but in that case, it's only off for 5 or 10 minutes or so.
Thanks for taking part in this discussion and for offering a suggestion. Do take care.

I am cautiously optimistic at this point about the ice maker. Although there was no ice when I woke up today, I opened the freezer to look around. There was a sticker that says, "To advance ice maker, press "on" button for 15 seconds." I hadn't noticed that before. So, I pressed it for 20 seconds, just to be sure, then closed the freezer door. After about 15 seconds, I heard the sound of the water filling the tray. I was pretty happy.
When my husband came in from working outdoors, I told him what happened. He told me to look in the cube tray to see if there was water in there. I couldn't see any water so I stuck my finger in the ice tray. Sure enough, my finger broke through a very thin layer of ice that had already frozen. So, I'm pretty sure it's working now.
We'll see. We have a warranty on the fridge until 2010, so I'm hoping that if I end up having to call the repair guy to come out, some of the fee will be covered.
You have a good day, too, Cocoa33.

i think its a waste of time try to request a service call. i would try to fix it on my own. if i can't i would rather buy another one. nobody really knows if the repair man will charge more than u can afford to dish out. its best to save your self the trouble, and buy a new appliance. u can avoid the warranty problems u may have to deal with.

Hello Cocoa33.
Well, the appliance is under warranty until 2010 so I'm hoping either it will be covered or that it won't cost much to fix it. I can't believe it just stopped working completely because I flipped the switch to "off" before we left. That's just crazy. I am hoping there's ice in there in the morning. No way are we buying a brand new fridge just because the ice maker doesn't work. It's just a small part of the refrigerator that can either be repaired or replaced.
Thanks for your response.

Hello fjgamer.
That's great that you can figure out how to fix stuff and put it back together. The refrigerator is still under warranty so I am hoping that, if I do have to call for a repair, it will be mostly covered.
Well, thanks for your response on this one. Take care.

I'm in kind of the same boat you are. My ice dispenser quit. It still makes ice, but the shute doesn't close after it dispenses, so then all the other ice cubes melt together. I finally quit using the dispenser and just reach in for it now. I've been afraid to call for help because I would imagine it will cost alot to fix. And truthfully, I really just hate strangers in my house.

Hi TessWhite.
Oh gosh, I sure do hate to hear that your ice dispenser is not working properly. I hate to have strangers in the house as well and usually try to schedule it when my husband is also home.
Although there wasn't ice in it this a.m. when I woke up, I noticed a sticker in the freezer that said, "To advance the ice maker, press the "on" button for 15 seconds." So, I did. Then, I heard the water trickle into the ice cube tray. I was pretty elated.
My husband told me to look in the tray for water. I didn't see it so I stuck my finger in and it did break through a very thin layer of ice into water. So, I'm thinking that got it going again.
Wish me luck. Hope you decide to call for a repair of your ice dispenser, TessWhite. Maybe you could have a friend or neighbor be present when the repair guy is scheduled to come. Do take care.

Hey pearl, I know what you mean. I have had refig problems
and I get so nervous waiting for the man to come and wondering
what the outcome will be and how much it will cost and if
it can be fixed. I don't think you have to worry. It is a
relatively new refrig and it was making ice before you went
on your trip. It just may need some time or some little
tweek to get started up again. It can't possibly be anything
major. So dond't worry so much. Hopefully it will make ice
by the morning. If it doesn't like I said it just may need
a little "help". Let us know what happens.

Hi Opal26.
Thank you so much for your kind and supportive words! Well, there was no ice this a.m. so when I was "investigating" in the freezer, I noticed a sticker that said, "To advance the ice maker, press and hold the "on" button for 15 seconds." Well, I held it for 20 seconds, just to be sure. Then, I closed the freezer door and waited, listening. Within a minute, I heard the water trickling into the tray. I was pretty psyched at that.
When my husband came in from working outside, I told him about it and he said to look in the ice tray to see if there's water in there. I looked and couldn't see any, so I stuck my finger in the tray. It broke thru a very thin layer of ice. So, I'm assuming that means it's back working again. Plus the fridge motor kind of kicked up a little louder, too, which I hope means the ice maker is working.
But, you are right, there's no need to worry about it. My husband taught me something a long time ago that I'd never heard. He looked me straight in the eyes and said, 'Any problem that can be solved with money is not a problem." What he meant was that we would both work for however long it took to pay for whatever it was. I try to remind myself of that every now and then. But today, you did it for me. And for that, I thank you.
Take care, Opal26.

well yeah i did so many times..and it takes a day or two to have them fix our tv or whatever...and if its under warranty i had no option but to wait for them to fix it...but if its not ..then ill call for another ...
