Dress Her Up

At the top of my garden I have a shed about 13 feet long by 6' wide. Unfortunately it is in a very poor state of repair and I really do need to either knock it down, or renovate it. However, next weekend my daughter is having a BBQ and wants to use the shed as a bar area. I am trying to think of ways of making the shed look more presentable without costing the earth. I thought of streamers and candles in jars hanging outside. I would be grateful for any ideas that you might have to make my eyesore a thing of beauty.

If the shed is made of wood tack paper plates all over it with the names of her friends AND relatives on the plates and then hand out darts to everyone and see who has the best aim for the centre (where the name should be) after everyone has had a few pints! Winner gets to take the plates off the shed and bin them! ROFL

Now that's an idea. How long before some buffoon manages to break a window do you think?

Your garden shed has windows? What a concept! Temporary boards over the windows are out of the question? Otherwise, I'd just take up a collection while the darts are flying and anyone who breaks a window pays for it out of the collection plate!

It's too dark to take a photo now, but it has two windows to the front and one on each side. The shed is more like a cricket pavilion. Maybe some boards wouldn't be such a bad idea either.

Oh dear, two Pike twisters in a few minutes of logging on!!Hello Piky anyway..if this shed is as dilapidated as you describe it would it not just be better used to `cook` the burgers on rather than serve drinks from?,and pop off and buy a little trolley from B and Q to serve the punch from?..but you could have it as a theme shed..the theme being chosen by your daughter..not Piky..maybe she has a television programme or a film star that she is particularly fond of ,you could peper it with printed posters of him/her/programme..Oh dear Ruby..not one of your best ldeas by any means...(MY MIND IS ON BAKED BEANS AND GABERDINE)

Just wondering if you would like a bottle of Lambrini to launch the shed?..I have a good vintage one here..

I have just looked up from our tryst and sen your response. No point leaving it to daughter. She'll do nothing and then moan when it doesn't look right!! It's not so bad that it needs to be cooking material, although I am tempted. Actually right noe it looks quite rustic with budlia hanging over the front and brambles to the side. Now, good, vintage and Lambrini in the same sentence Ruby. Are you sure? How about a Chablis or a cold Frascati with a strawberry or two floating in it?

Yes well if the butterfly bush looks good there then go for the wild nature look, and scatter some poppies about and let them all be flower power girls. Now ,when I say Lambrini,i mean Lambini, not Jacobs creek,or Echo falls, but Lambrini, and scrap the strawberry idea,I much prefer a gherkin on a stick thankyou...chablis indeed....hmmm

I suggest making a thatched roof out of hay for your shed. Then if the weather is dry you could have some streamers coming down from the edges of it. Do be careful if you do use candles in case anything catches fire. You could use string with tinsel on the end to make a few sparkles. It might be nice to have colored card around part of your shed to make it look like less of an eyesore. You could have nicely shaped plastic glasses with cocktail umbrellas in. It might be nice to have shaped bowls of crisps, nuts and dried fruit. I hope that your daughter has a great time and your shed is lovely for the BBQ event. Good luck.

I'm not sure that I have the thatching skills appropriate for the whole roof. But otherwise those are great ideas thank you Maxima.

I would put in a long table fixed up nice with a colourful sheet as a table cloth. That can be used as the bar counter.I would also use a solid print sheet or sheets to hang over all the spots that look worn down ov er the shed. For example:the roof or the walls.Bring in some arrangements of fresh cut flowers,a few candles in jars and some ballons and your all set.

Wall coverings are a very good idea. Perhaps she could paint some old sheets. Great ideas thank you Neelygal.

Solar lights are a good idea Littleowl. I'm hoping that weather will stay good for her. It's pouring down here right now.

Candles in jars are very lovely. Do you have ivy? You can cut long strands of it and drape it down the walls. Don't know about where you live, but here you can buy lengths of rush/bamboo stuff (in a roll) really cheaply which makes good garden screening. A couple of those up against the walls of the shed would give a nice, tropical feeling! Woo! (Bring on the hula girlies ...)

I live in the UK Guy. Land of ivy!! I actually do have some growing on the shed already along with some honeysuckle that long ago stopped smelling. Actually I have some ivy growing inside anyway!!!

hi pikey why not give the bar area a hawaiian flavor with hanging lays, darn senior moment leis I guess is the spelling you know those darned floral circles of fragrant flowers, perhaps a bit of netting, and a few big sea shells hung here and there along with the candles and streamers.I think a hula dancer in a grass skirt is a bit much less you want to dress the part, just kidding really. Maybe a few hawiaan records though to give the flavor of things.

I think that I might make a very attractive hula dancer Hatley!! Just keep my grass skirt away from the lawn mower. LOL. Good idea though. So long as the torrential rain doesn't dampen our spirits.
