Does poor grammar irritate you?

I was just wondering how people feel about poor grammar skills.. I myself can use some more education on the subject of grammar. However, I do find myself getting a bit irritated when I do receive an e-mail with content such as : "he don't be in the office right now" or.. "She don't like none of that" WOW that drives me crazy! These are mainly work e-mails I am either copied on, or sent directly as a reply.. Is this just me or do others feel the same? Again, I can use some more education on this subject. I mean no offense to anyone, just curious.

Not so comfortable but not to the level of being irritated. As along as i can understand the general idea, poor grammar wouldn't be making too much difference.I mean, grammar is bascially used to serve for the communication. However,i have met some people with poor grammar that can't even make himself understood,it really pissed me off.

I totally understand what you are saying, I do see it alot, I guess, on a personal level it is not very important; it does bother me when corporate e-mails are sent throughout the company this way, even to clients.

I try my best to use correct grammer and English, when I post my reply. But even after my best efforts, inadvertent mistakes do occur. If I get to notice my mistakes, soon after submitting my reply, I immediately post the correction too. As far as others are concerned, even if they use incorrect grammer and spelling, I do not take it very seriously, provided I am able to get the meaning of the sentence. I agree with you that not using proper English sometimes could be very irritating.

I don't think it matters as much in our postings here on Mylot, the biggest issue I have is when I receive company e-mails that are written very poorly. It can get very bothersome. Thanks for your response! Have a great day!

Yes, that really irritates me. I don't know why. I try to use good grammar, and it bothers me when people don't even try. I can't stand when somebody says " I don't know nothing". I hate that!

With me, it really depends. If I go to school with these people, then I know that they are receiving the same education that I am and that they should be able to speak English just as well as I do. There was a foreign exchange student from Germany that came to my school in our senior year, and she spoke English with better grammar than the majority of the school did. I have known some of these people since Elementary school. They have the ability to speak with proper grammar, but they choose not to because it is considered "cool" here to butcher the English language. I understand that some people learn their speech habits from their parents, but I notice that my own parents make a lot of errors. So, what is their excuse?

One my my closest friends lives in Sweden, and we write back and forth all of the time. But, it is just a rare word here and there, instead of an entire sentence. I notice that most people who are Swedish or grew up in Sweden make the same errors. So, I can understand that sometimes location has a bit to do with how you learn English, but as I said, where I live, they taught us perfect American English, so most people should be able to write and speak it well. I do not believe that it is "cool" either to butcher the language on purpose. In fact, it kind of angers me.

Well, I have noticed my parents do the same. I understand the "cool thing", but reality is that, it really is not "cool" in my eyes anyway. We are educated, I am sure we cannot remember every single thing we are taught during our school years, but proper grammar should not be a thing to forget. How many people forget to ride a bike?

I dont mind it as long as i can able to understand the sentence then it ok.Anyway it doesnt need to be always right in grammar,I think some of people canĀ“t be really good in grammar like me.But atleast my sentence is understable.

Well I feel all are not lucky to attend schools where teaching of grammer is good, so I do not go crazy about it but if a person happens to be someone near and dear one then I do correct him or her. Though being an Indian I do not expect everyone to be perfect in English language.

Hmm.. I don't think I get irritated with grammatical error cause even me as that incapability, as long as I can understand the thought its fine with me especially if English is not his natural language. But when i encounter those kinds of situation I feel that I need more considerable mental effort to understand that simple sentence.

Yes, and I can relate to that. What gets consfusing, well frustrating is when you KNOW someone can, and does speak English on a daily basis as their primary language, they just cannot get out a clear statement, if I have to read back over the same wording 2 times.. guess what.. Delete!

There are many ocasions when spelling and grammar become a little rough around the deges, but maybe a lot of it is down to rushing the work,we all have time limits and if we feel that we are pushed to meet the limit, then we tend to rush our work, but if the writing or grammar is veru bad then yes it can be a little maddening, but lol im no angel myself!

i am not irritated as long as i understand it, it would be fine...but when it comes to a point that i don't understand the meaning then i would be a bit irritated. no one is perfect...i also mistakenly use wrong grammar sometimes. it is just like bare with me, i will bare with you!

It drives me nuts!!! I hate when people cannot use correct grammar. I don't think that there is a spell check on mylot but there is in most email services and on Microsoft Word, etc. Still people send emails where words are spelled wrong and grammar is incorrect. There is no excuse but laziness. All that it takes is pushing a button.

I just take notice. I don't judge and criticize especially here on my lot were members are from all over the world. I do made mistakes with grammar from time to time. No matter how hard I tried to perfect my English grammar I just failed. Frustrating but i learned to give my self a break. Nobody is perfect. That's my only consolation.

Hiya reckon, I just asked as a general Discussion. I myself is such a culprit of Abusing the English Grammar, I like to read different points of views. That is the reason I start discussions.. I am glad you do not judge, that is a great quality. This subject was not meant to feend anyone, nor was it directed at anyone who uses mylot! Sorry if anyone has been offended!

i will be happy if i find other write in poor grammar, means that im not the only one who often carelessly write in wrong grammar. he he he he.., i often find my classmates also use poor grammar, may be because we do not merely learn about English, but we use English to learn.

No, it doesn't bother me that some people have poor grammar skills except when I absolutely cannot make out what it is that they are trying to say. I will add that some of us are just better at some things and lousy at others. Math is a subject that I will never clearly understand but on the other hand english and writing is something that I excel at.

I do feel the same sometimes. Especially when the topic really interests me and when i read the contents it is full of wrong grammars making it very hard to understand. I myself also am not that good in grammar but at least i try my best trying to write in terms other people might also understand the things I'm trying to say. :)

Actually, for me its the poor grammar here that drives me nuts. I realize that many many of our myLotters are from other countries and english isn't their first language, so I try and overlook it. But sometimes I read a sentence or paragraph that some people type and I can't even make sense of it. They use the totally wrong words, many are mispelled and alot don't even bother with puncuation at all. Again, I mean no offense, but it does get irritating to me. I'm not perfect and I often have typos, but some of these posts I can't even understand the grammar is so bad.

hahahha, really funny. I must say that if we're goin to follow the rules, it really does matter. It is really a big deal. As much as possible we should really learn to use proper grammar. But I still consider the fact that nobody is perfect and I really believe that all things as long as you are eager and willing to learn sure you can do it. Practice and study makes perfect. So excuse it darling, if you feel that he/she is poor in that aspects I guess much better to lend a help...what do you think?

Hi Nanciem! Poor grammer doesn't bother me most of time, unless it's really bad. I have gotten text messages and e-mails that I wasn't even able to read! That really annoys me. I agree, it definatly annoys me when people use double negatives and make no sense! I will admit, I abbreviate things sometimes, but I least try to make sense. Take care!

Hi Kellyann! That is what irritates most people, is when we cannot understand what they are trying to say. Sometimes I feel like asking; HELLO are we speaking the same language?.. And the scary part is just that, people who take English upon as a second language have better grammar skills then we do (we being the U.S)

Hey poor grammar like in writing doesn't bother me, but when people speak like hicks and make almost no sense what so ever it kills me, i have so minor writing grammatical errors most of the time so that doesn't bother me, but speaking it should be correct.
