Is the childrens section at the book store becoming another toy store?

I have felt so frustrated lately with my oldest who is 3 1/2. See, I started buying her stickers about three months ago and it seems like ever since I have not been able to get her to stay focused on books when we go to the book store. She plays with all the stuffed animals, which I allow her to do and have no problem with, but when it comes to actually making a purchase she brings me book after book of stickers and if that doesn't work she brings me a Holly Hobbit toy or some activity kit where you paint your nails with finger polish.
Dont get me wrong, I am all about supporting my book stores but at the same time I do not agree with toys being mixed in with books in the childrens section because obviously, it takes more effort to read a book then to just play with stickers or paint your nails. I think they should have a section all to themselves so I can take my daughter to the book store and keep her interested in books so she can continue her habit throughout her life.
Do you think it matters? What about toys at a book store?
What do you do to keep your kids focused on books?
I love visitng the book store for myself too but lately it seems like my daughter thinks its just another visit to the toy store, can you blame her.

I have to agree with you--there are many tempting toys in place of books at the bookstore. However, I balk at criticizing it, because I know that bookstores are doing it merely for business--if fewer people (kids and their parents) liked the idea of toys infecting the children's book section, bookstores probably wouldn't choose to put them there. I get the feeling that popularity forces bookstores to do this, so the problem is probably more deeply rooted in people's dislike of reading.
As a side note, there are some bookstores that don't have this problem, and I think most of them are a bit smaller than the big chain stores. Maybe you could look at several different bookstores and then pick one that doesn't have stickers and nail polish in the children's section?
Good luck!
