I need the help of some hardcore pan fishermen...

I normally use worms, but I was told I should up my game as it were to plastic lures for good sized panfish. I love bluegill, but they say crappie is way better. However I have never caught one. A couple months ago I caught my first bass, I lipped it and everything ... it was awersome. Now I want to catch big panfish. So here is what I did. I got a panfish jig/lure kit, you know the big 839 piece kit. It's filled with tiny lures, spiiners, and hooks. Now I understand when fishing with live worms, it's basically cast and wait. Does this apply to plastic lures as well? I fish primarily from a dock or shore. How do you use these things to catch bluegill and crappie? Although the pieces are small, they still seem a bit big for a bluegill to eat. But I was told that they will in fact eat it. Please let me know how you work your magic with these. Thanks
